Megan Lynch’s Kitchen Design Wins Two Awards

Design Matters, News and Events0 comments

Designer Megan LynchWatch out for this up-and-comer!  Our design consultant, Megan Lynch, designed a kitchen worthy of the customer’s kudos and two design awards.

Along with winning the Prestigious ‘Shiloh Design Awards’ contest, this beautiful kitchen also took first place at the 2010 NARI remodeler’s award show in Kansas city.  It is an elegant and beautiful kitchen in every regard.

Megan describes the project:   “The original galley kitchen in the 1930’s Cape Cod home was dated and not functional for a young family.  It was also closed off from the rest of the home.  The new addition combined the spaces to create one large room.”

Megan Lynch's winning design“One major challenge to this kitchen design layout was a structural column in the middle of the space. We incorporated this into the kitchen island and addressed it with applied molding details to make it an architectural element in the space.”

The new kitchen features a multi-level island that functions as seating, serving, and working space.  The cabinetry has the latest in storage innovations and a walk in pantry provides great convenience.  This family can now enjoy a range of activities together in the space!

Historical Hyde Park Renovation Fireplaces!

Design Matters, slide0 comments

The Hyde Park duplex we are working on has beautiful and historically significant fireplaces.  We researched these fireplaces when we remodeled the neighboring duplex last year and were excited to discover that they are actually finished with tiles created by Ernest Batchelder.  Ernest Batchelder lived from 1875 – 1957 and is best known as a tile designer of distinctive cast-ceramic tiles influenced by the Gothic Revival and English Arts and Crafts Movement.  Here is a link to an article about Mr. Batchelder and from there you can also view more of his fireplaces, http://www.tilenut.com/Batchelder/Batchsynopsis.html The pictures we are displaying were taken in the duplex we are currently remodeling.  It is fascinating to view the detail and different personalities of the accent tiles on these fireplaces.

Hope you enjoy these pictures and the article about Ernest Batchelder.  Maybe you have a Batchelder fireplace?

Historical Hyde Park Renovation Safe Lead Paint Removal

Design Matters, News and Events0 comments

We began working on the historical Hyde Park renovation a few weeks ago. Since the building was erected in 1921, we followed safe lead practices as required by the EPA which included the isolation of the entire building, removal and proper disposal of all debris.  Upon the completion of demolition, the building was verified as lead-free and ready to be toured.  The attached pictures show the first floor kitchen and hall bathroom.  This bathroom is the same one that was pictured in our blog posting of February 7.  You can see up into the second floor hall bathroom from the first floor!  This is a great project and watching it come together will be lots of fun.  Keep tuned!

Bling Birdhouses – A Spin on Tradition

Design Matters, slide0 comments

Here’s a note from Donna Kirsopp, CKBR, Design Consultant

This past year as the holiday approached I wanted to give something from the heart to my family and friends. My father had become the master of birdhouses and built houses that replicated everything from a Georgia Mansion to a Log Cabin. These houses were so special that I have since been undertaking birdhouse restoration on some of the older ones.

With this in mind I thought I could honor the tradition my father started with my own spin on it. As luck would have it, one of my suppliers was in the process of discontinuing a line of glass so they had ample samples. Each house was inspired from accent tile pieces selected for doors windows and the gable ends of the roofs. With these pieces selected, I went about selecting the balance of the glass that would cover each house.

The understructure of the houses was a exterior composite material that will never rot. Of course I researched bird hole sizes, interior sizes and roof heights. They even have a removable trap door in the rear to clean out the nests annually.

As the holiday approached I could not wait to give them and carry on the tradition my father has started for us. The gifts were met with tears and hugs as my family understood the significance of the gift.  The only down side is that no one wants to put them out for a bird to live in, go figure!!

Restoring a Kitchen Back to it’s Roots

Prefinished Maple Cabinetry

We completed this kitchen and powder bathroom remodel last year in the Brookside area.   The new space features prefinished maple cabinetry with a rich sable stain that makes this space very warm and “Mince Gold” countertops were selected for their unusual veining and eye catching gold flecks.

The undercabinetry lights show off the natural stone backsplash material “Dore Royale” and a glass and stone mosaic inset creates a focal point at cooking area.   The new custom made Marvin casement window with custom Craftman lite design at the sink area allows a lot more light into the kitchen and is in keeping with the home’s original style.  “Palm” green was selected for the paint color from the Eddie Bauer Craftsman Bungalow Collection.

Gorgeous Staircase Transformation

Staircase Transformation BEFORE

We recently completed a remodel, part of which included updating the main staircase of our clients’ home.

Staircase Transformation AFTER, Gorgeous!

This update included new oak treads and risers, new carpet runner, wrought iron spindles and paint.  The change in this home is so dramatic that it seems difficult to believe that it is actually the same house we originally walked into.

Historical Hyde Park Project Before

Design Matters, slide0 comments

We are really excited to be starting a project in historical Hyde Park.  This wonderful duplex was built in 1921, and still posses many of the beautiful, unique qualities found in buildings built during that era.  The generous moldings, doors and trim are original.  Much of the trim was maintained in its original rich, warm brown tone, but some has been painted.  All of the windows, trim and doors will remain in tact.

We will be cleaning and touching up any stained trim, repainting any painted trim.  Signs of aging, such as cracks in the plaster, will be erased.  We will be updating both kitchens and four bathrooms while maintaining the personality of the era.

The original built-in cabinetry located in the small breakfast rooms off the kitchen will remain in tact.

We hope you will enjoy following along with us as we take this work of art and restore it back to its original grandeur.

We will be keeping you up-to-date on our progress with this wonderful project.

Dramatic Bathroom Makeover!

Bathroom Makeover Before

Bathroom Makeover After, Beautiful!

Wow what a dramatic bathroom makeover from Schloegel’s One Week Bath!  The old pink tile and pedestal sink came out in this bedroom bath and was replaced with classic white subway tile and a furniture style cabinet with Carrera marble top. We chose a pomegranate color for the walls that truly makes a dramatic statement. How elegant and easy — just one week!
