The angle timbers are installed at the three larger rafters to create a truss that supports the load of the rafters.
The final layer in preparation for the roofing is the sheathing. In a lot of construction today, we see sheet material being used for the base to shingles. In older homes that had shake shingle roofing, a technique called skip sheathing was used to allow the shingles to breath while providing strips for the shingles to be nailed to. The secret to keeping shake shingle from leaking is the tar paper that is applied between the sheathing and the shingles.
Tar paper was not going to work for the aesthetics of this project, but the customer still wanted to be able to sit under the roofing without rain or snow leaking through. The HOA in the area we are working still require hand-split shake shingle to all roofs. Another form of cedar shingle which is cut very true called machine shake offers the ability to be installed in a tighter manner eliminating the leaking potential. These shingle do look different than the neighborhood and the existing roofing on the home and the idea was rejected as the finish look.
The final outcome is a two layer roof, the underside still cedar and visible and the upper layer to match the home. This baby will not leak!
