Mirrors can make a room

Design Matters0 comments

Mirrors can always be used as design elements. They can add dimension to a small room by eliminating the boundaries of walls and can be used to increase the amount of both natural and supportive lighting as it virtually bounces around the room.

Mirror options go beyond silvered mirrors to include antiqued, tinted or concave or convex shapes.  The mirror used in this bathroom project is antiqued and designed into a leaded design. For more mirror types, check out MirrorLink.org.

A new purpose for out-of-commission cabinets

Design Matters, slide0 comments

This homeowner’s friend in Chicago wanted to remodel her young kitchen. She decided to give the cabinetry and counter tops to her friend in town.

We were able to reconfigure the existing cabinetry and add some new cabinetry to make this remarkable transformation for our client. The counter tops also needed to be reworked and added to. Can you detect what was original and what was newly fabricated?

Congratulations to our client on a beautiful new kitchen!

Figuring out the proper wood finish

Design Matters, slide0 comments

The table’s cut-off end has not been presented to Sally for final stain selection. Tony, the painter, should have the counter stained and finished mid next week.

We think it is important to understand the choice you are making when selecting the finish that you will use should you decide on a wood or butcher block counter top

Finishing practices for wood furniture and cabinetry, although very durable, are not considered food safe.  For more information, read Fine Woodworking magazine’s article with the pros and cons of food safe finishes.

Doing our part

News and Events0 comments

Employees here at Schloegel all contribute more than just the work they do in the office or out in the field. We really value philanthropy and community involvement, and here’s a great example of how we do that. Designer Gayle Jagoda has a few words about some volunteer work she’s recently started:

Last Thursday I started my volunteer work at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. It is exactly where I feel I can contribute the most help and support. I am going to be a path-finder—the role of a path-finder is to guide people to the various parts of the hospital. It is a very large facility and helping people find their way takes away some confusion during a time that could already be very stressful. It is a great hospital and everyone I have met has been amazing.

Excited about the new Kohler collection

We always love to see what Kohler introduces each year at the product launch at KBIS (Kitchen & Bath Industry Show). This year, they introduced a very modern faucet collection called the “Stance” collection. Wow! We can’t wait to use it!

A troubled tub

Design Matters, slide0 comments

In this before picture, you can see a really dated jetted tub. This tub was never used because the first time it was turned on the water turned black from the residual that was in the jets—YUCK! The white tile tub deck and backsplash, as well as the polished brass hardware (that has oxidized), makes this tub replacement a must.

In this progress picture, the new, free-standing pedestal tub with air jets (no more water resting in pipes) is sitting off to one side. A shelf made of the same material that will be used for countertops and all other horizontal surfaces in the bathroom is tucked in the corner. This shelf is curved to match the curve of the tub and will rest on the high part of the tub lip. This shelf will house the water faucet and handles, as well as the “eye” for the tub’s remote control.

This is going to be a great change, and I am sure that this new tub will get lots of use.

Table transformation

Family history will be preserved in this kitchen makeover. Sally and Don raised their children around this maple butcher block table.

We have planned a new kitchen island that will utilize this modified and renewed table as the new island counter.

Not only are we restoring a piece of family history, but we’re also recycling lumber. Happy Arbor Day!

Wood work

This photo shows Gabe Chiu, one of our Lead Carpenters, constructing a hollow box beam that will soon be installed in a lower level remodel that he is working on. Gabe is working on these beams in our shop while the drywall is being installed and finished on his job. The wood is a knotty pine that will be stained to tie-in to the knotty alder that is being used for the cabinets. Schloegel Design Remodel provides all kinds of carpentry services — from framing to trim.

A lucky ladies’ night

Here are three of our designers — Gayle Jagoda, Megan Lynch and Donna Kirsopp — enjoying “Ladies’ Night” at Wilson Lighting. Gayle even picked out a chandelier for her own bathroom remodel and got 20% off! She also won a $100.00 worth of Trapp Candles. Her lucky night!

Kitchen addition

News and Events0 comments

This is a kitchen room addition we are currently working on.  When completed, these homeowners will be enjoying a new kitchen with an expanded living area as part of the kitchen space. As a part of this project, we had to expand the electrical service and relocate it.  Note the new meter and riser on the right side of the addition. This is pretty typical when working on homes of this age.
