Schloegel hosts Serbians

News and Events0 comments

Schloegel Design Remodel recently participated in the Community Connections Program of the United States Agency for International Development and World Learning, in which we hosted 10 visitors from Serbia. The Community Connections Program is administered locally by the International Visitors Council of Greater Kansas City (KCIVC).

The goal of the KCIVC is to promote citizen diplomacy by person-to-person contacts to help shape United States foreign relations, which is why the ten participants stayed in the homes of local community citizens for 22 nights.

Jake Schloegel is shown with the visiting Serbians as they tour SDR’s shop area

The purpose of their visit to SDR was to hear how a small company like Schloegel Design Remodel responds to the call of corporate social responsibility. Serbia, having been under Soviet rule for many years, is new to the free market system and the social responsibilities that come with it. While at Schloegel they viewed a PowerPoint presentation of the various community service projects that Schloegel participates in on a regular basis and heard how Schloegel deals with ethical business issues.

For more information on the Community Connections Program visit the International Visitors Council of Greater Kansas City web site.

Here is a photo of our oldest son, Ben along with his dog Sammy.  They dropped by the office the other day.  Ben has just returned from Hawaii where he participated in the world championship Ironman race.  To qualify for this race, Ben participated in the Louisville Ironman where he finished 1st in his age group and 6th overall, out of 3000 racers.  Ben had a great race in Hawaii, finishing 78th out of 2000 world class racers.  Ben had the second best marathon time of any USA racers, finishing it in 3 hours and 2 minutes, this after swimming 1.2 miles and biking 112 miles.  Ben wore bib number 590 in honor of John Glaser, the Shawnee firefighter that lost his life in the line of duty earlier this year.  In addition to being a firefighter, John was also an Ironman participant.  Congratulations Ben on an awesome race.  To find out more about Ben and his racing and training services, check out www.benschloegel.com and www.emgkc.com

Closing in the basement door, which is still accessible through the porch, and changing the powder bath door to a pocket door resolved the issue of multiple swinging doors and opened up space for a fixed island. The abandoned chimney flue was replaced with a new professional range and hood, landing space and wall cabinets that feature specialty glass and puck lights to show off the homeowner’s colorful dishware. Maple cabinetry with a rich sable stain and Mince Gold countertops add warmth to the space.

Silver Award for Best Whole House Remodel $200,000- $500,000

Design Consultant – Donna Kirsopp CKBR

Plans Manager- Leslie Hatfield

Project Manager – Chris Peterson CR, CLC

Lead Carpenter- Henry Ramirez CR, CLC

An exterior porch projection with a cross member of trim molding and a decorative louver vent balances the front elevation of the home’s exterior and provides protection to guests. Leading to the redesigned master suite is a hallway accented by inlaid hardwood flooring, wainscot paneling and blown-glass sconces. Carrara marble set in a herringbone pattern is prominent throughout the master bath, which also features espresso-stained cherry cabinetry and Calcutta honed marble. The additional bathrooms include elegant touches such as amber glass wall tile, a roomy shower with Euro glass surround and a mahogany vanity counter.

Finger Jointed Trim

Design Matters0 comments

I had my doubts about finger jointed exterior trim when it became common some 20 years ago. I thought at the time that it would be troublesome. I called my millwork provider and expressed my concern. I could see the wood separating over time at the machined joints and moisture seeping in and causing the joint to fail.  He assured me that it was tested and retested and found to be sound. Well here it is 20 some years later and it is failing. Finger jointed trim was often used in window trim known as “brick mold”. See the photo below of a house we are working on.

We are replacing a fair amount of the rotted trim on this 20 something year old house. Today they have much better products, such as PVC and engineered wood. James Hardie, Azek Building Products and LP Building Products all offer a great selection of PVC and engineered wood.

Do you have rotted wood on your house? Call Schloegel Design Remodel and we will replace it for you.

Schloegel Design Remodel’s team members believe in participating and supporting the communities we work and live in. This photo is a perfect example of the Schloegel team members getting involved.

Doug Drury, a long time Certified Lead Carpenter with us, participated in his church’s community service program. Doug’s church, through its H.O.T. (Helping our Town) project, built a wheelchair ramp for two very deserving 11 year old twin boys, Christian and Dawson. They have Cerebral Palsy and are wheel chair bound. Doug and his crew have made their lives a little bit better. Thanks Doug for sharing your very special carpenter talents.

The Importance of a Well-Organized Closet

Design Matters0 comments

Over the years Schloegel Design Remodel has been involved in several closet makeovers.  As wardrobes expand the organization of a closet becomes critical.  One needs to look no further than this photo.

To protect the privacy of the owner of these feet, she is an office manager of a local design/remodel company, I will not mention her name.  I have never seen her closet but I would imagine it is in need of a makeover.  She didn’t realize she had a mismatched pair of sandals on until 1:30 in the afternoon.  Had she hired us to do a closet makeover, she would have noticed her wardrobe error immediately.  On the positive side, she is very excited to have another pair identical to this pair.  Call Schloegel Design Remodel for any of your remodeling or closet makeover needs.

Insulating Troubles in Chicagoland

Ask Jake0 comments

Jake,

We are converting our screened-in porch (12×13 ft. on the existing 4 ft. deep concrete slab) into a 3-season room (with insulated windows, 3 ft. wall, and an insulated door.) The enclosed porch has a flat roof with deck (balcony) on top. We live in the extreme weather (heat/humid/wind/cold) of Chicagoland. Hence, insulation and condensation are always our key concerns. As far as building experience, we are totally intimidated when dealing with exterior structure. What is the best way to insulate the enclosed porch and avoid mold problems in the future? Should we put a house wrap or foam sheaths on the exterior framing before putting on the insulation bat in between the wall cavities? We plan to use PT plywood (not siding) as the exterior wall though. Also, would the PT plywood being exterior wall whist having gypsum sheathing for interior wall appropriate for the circumstance? We haven’t put much thought into the floor insulation just yet. Sigh. Thought an area rug will do for the time being. Thank you for reading and for your advice.

Anna

Anna,

Your questions would indicate that you may be biting off more than you can handle.  What you are asking pretty much covers the whole “building envelope” idea.  I do not know the exact building requirements in Chicago, so if I were you, I would find a reputable designer or supplier that could walk you through the insulation requirements.  I assume a 3 season room means you will not be using it in the winter months.  Does this mean you will not be heating the room?  If you are not heating it, then the insulation requirements really are not that important, since you are not using energy to heat and retain the heat in the room.

In our area, Kansas City, the floor requires a R-19 (6”), and the ceiling requires a R-38 (11”) plus the ventilation area.  Check out a foam product called Icynene. This product requires less thickness to deliver more R value and since it is closed cell, it does not require any air space. Conventional insulation requires ventilation to minimize condensation.

Un-insulated concrete slabs are very difficult to keep comfortable in cold climates, since concrete is a conductor of heat and cold. Have you considered a heated floor? They make these types of rooms very toasty on those chilly days. Warmly Yours, a flooring company that we use, has some great options when it comes to heated floors.

-Jake
