Bathroom & Closet Remodel Requires Combination of Two Different Syles
Our Designer Donna Kirsopp Helps Create a Space Where Zen Meets Glam
Dan and Christine’s home was 20 years old and had the marking of the standard builder grade quality and look of a 90’s home. The drafty glass block snail shower was leaking and the large whirlpool tub was not used. The vanity area, though ample, was low with cultured marble countertops, oversized sheet mirror and poor lighting for makeup. The stool was located in a small, dark separate room.
Although the bathroom was a priority, the clients seemed to have just as many issues with the closet. The closet had basic rods and shelving and was unattractive and too minimal for the allotted space.
Dan and Christine had two very different styles; Dan was wanting a very spa Zen feel, and Christine wanted a boutique glam look, especially as it related to her closet.
A plan was developed that created separate entries to an enclosed stool room and large shower area concealed by a dividing wall dedicated to the vanity. The shower and stool room were divided by a wall which acts as the support to the vanity wall. The remainder of the available space allowed for a large soaking tub and a dressing table. The utilization of the space maintains a clear path through the bath, from the bedroom to the closet, with slight relocation and enlargement of both door openings. The large glass block window, the only natural light in the space, was shortened and installed as a fixed insulated clear glass panel. The window remains in the shower area allowing light to stream over the wall to the stool room and the vanity area.
Selection of materials is where we melded Dan and Christine’s visions together. Espresso euro-style cabinetry with flat panel doors and open shelving for towels are seen at the vanity to appeal to Dan’s aesthetic. Matching cabinetry at the dressing table includes pull out vanity organizers for hair appliances and makeup, and tall flanking cabinetry for toiletry items. The cabinetry is embellished with quartz counter tops with mirrored glass chips creating the glam effect Christine desired. This material was also used in the shower for a seat and shampoo niche shelf built into the dividing wall between. The tub, a featured element, was the perfect size for a relaxing evening soak. The shower, equipped with two showering areas and large format subway tile was embellished with a sparkling stone pebble shower pan. Bamboo inspired large format floor tile in a soft taupe gray was a subtle fusion of all elements seen in the space.
Taupe strips frame all mirrors and at the vanity, a matching white glass tile surrounds the mirror frame as a total wall of glass. Careful calculations of each piece of glass led to working the design backwards from the glass finished wall to the starting framing. The satin etched glass, used as the entry doors to the shower and stool room are also used in cabinetry doors. Wall sconces at each mirror were supplemented with overhead LED can lighting. The final lighting fixtures, which include the chandelier at tub and the closet entry, emulate all the glam a girl could want while remaining true to the feel of the space.
The closet entry, visible from the bedroom through the bath, provides an attractive view. The closet was carefully detailed including a lingerie storage cabinet as seen from the bathroom with hanging storage at the top and many shallow drawers for small items. Built-in closet rods, shelving and lower storage drawers throughout are finished in a soft gray. A blue and gray patterned carpet blends the tones of the bathroom together with the closet and bedroom, and all are accented in shades of gray, blue-grey and lavender.
The final outcome of this space incorporated both Dan and Christine’s styles and creates a beautiful blend of serenity and functionality!
