The original idea of creating the pergola for our customer included utilizing the space for the current screen porch to increase living space.
For this, the entire back wall of both the existing sunroom and the screen porch is removed and wall is replaced with 3’ wide x 9’ tall window units, including a 6’ French door to the patio area. This wall of glass will bring more light into the interior living room space, expand the current living area, and create a view to the pergola and gardens beyond.
With this amount of glass, although the highest quality low-E glass filled with argon gas, regulating the temperature of the space needed to be considered. The concern was not so much heating, but cooling the space. The existing system was adequate to handle the square footage, but the thermostat would be calling for different amounts of heating and cooling than the interior portion of the home and bedrooms. Balancing the system was a concern.
A separate system with a separate thermostat is installed in the attic above, and commercial linear diffusers about 2” wide by 48” long run continuously along the windows to control the space more comfortably. A great space is only great if it’s comfortable to be in!
