  • Planning a Kitchen Renovation? Explore These 3 Essential Types of Kitchen Remodels!

Last updated on May 7, 2024

No two kitchen remodels at Schloegel are the same, but they usually fall into one of three categories: Refresh, Remove and Replace, or Full Remodel. We're breaking down each type of remodel and the benefits and considerations of each.

Kitchen Refresh Remodel

A Refresh remodel is perfect for homeowners who want to give their kitchen a facelift without undergoing a significant renovation. This type of remodeling focuses on cosmetic changes that can breathe new life into the space. We recently shared 5 Brilliant Kitchen Makeovers with Existing Cabinets where you can see inspiration for keeping your cabinets!

In this Overland Park kitchen we painted the perimeter cabinets white and the island blue. We removed the 2nd tier in the island providing more counterspace. New quartz counters and a subway tile backsplash were installed. New knobs, lights, and a faucet help pull together the fresh look. Finally, a fresh coast of wall paint. See more of this kitchen.

Here are some common elements of a Refresh remodel:

Painting: A fresh coat of paint on the walls or cabinets can instantly brighten and modernize the kitchen.

Updating Hardware: Swapping out old cabinet knobs and drawer pulls for new ones can create a more cohesive and updated look.

Replacing Fixtures: Upgrading light fixtures, faucets, and sinks can add style and functionality to the kitchen.

Replacing countertops: While countertops are a pricing change, they are also one of the most dramatic! Replacing old laminate or granite tops with a new one can instantly update your kitchen.

Add or replace tile backsplash: If your tile is a bit dated, replacing it with new tile will change the look of your kitchen. Additionally, adding one will elevate your look if you don't currently have a tile backsplash.

Remove and Replace

Does your existing kitchen layout function well, but is the look just a bit worn? A Remove and Replace project might be perfect for you. It involves removing everything in the kitchen and reinstalling it with all new. It generally keeps the plumbing, electrical, and appliances in the exact location. While a Remove and Replace kitchen is an investment into your home, it does help save framing, drywall, electrical, and plumbing costs, which can add up fairly quickly.

In this Brookside kitchen we kept the same layout but that’s about where the similarities end. Everything was replaced including the windows, cabinets, counters, appliances, lighting, and the floors were refinished. See more of this kitchen.

Here are some features commonly addressed in a Remove and Replace Remodel:

Cabinets: Swapping old cabinets for new ones can dramatically change the look and functionality of the kitchen.

New appliances: New appliances instantly inject a modern feel, but what's even better than getting a fresh look - cooking with new appliances? Appliances are constantly improving; investing in new ones will make mealtimes more enjoyable.

Countertops: Installing new countertops in durable materials like granite or quartz can elevate the kitchen's aesthetic appeal and durability.

Flooring: Replacing old, worn flooring with new tiles, hardwood, or LVT can instantly refresh the space.

Fixtures: New sink(s), faucet(s), and light fixtures will help rejuvenate the kitchen.

Full Remodel

If your kitchen not only shows its age but its function also frustrates you, a full kitchen remodel is for you. In a Full remodel, your kitchen will be completely redesigned. The new layout may include removing walls and often expanding the kitchen's footprint. Additionally, all your kitchen components will be replaced.

This Brookside kitchen had the full remodel treatment. We redesigned the entire footprint removing walls, relocating door locations, and adding more windows. The new design is as beautiful as it is functional. The large T-shaped island provides plenty of storage and table style seating. The new appliance locations make preparing meals much easier and more robust ventilation for the 36” range. See more of this kitchen.

Here are some aspects typically addressed in a Full remodel:

Layout: Reconfiguring the layout to improve flow and functionality, such as adding an island or removing walls to create an open-concept space.

Customization: This includes incorporating custom cabinetry, built-in storage solutions, and unique design features tailored to the homeowner's preferences.

Luxury Features: High-end appliances, fixtures, and finishes will help create a luxurious and inviting culinary environment.

Lighting Plan: A full lighting plan will elevate your new kitchen, in addition to light fixtures. The plan will likely include dimmable overhead, undercabinet, and accent lights.

Whether you want to make minor updates or embark on a complete transformation, there's a kitchen remodel option to suit every need and budget. You can still customize the elements of your project, whether a Refresh, Remove and Replace, or a Full kitchen, to get the kitchen of your dreams.
