Kicking off the new year we take a look at what we believe will be some of the big design trends of 2021. 2020 wasn’t ideal but it did show us a new appreciation for our homes. Out of our time at home, some clear trends have evolved such as versatile spaces and a pull towards cozy/warm hues and materials.
1. A Nod to Nostalgia – Vintage
Whether you love or hate vintage items they’re making a comeback and for so many reasons. Vintage is environmentally friendly. It also is a unique turn from the mass-produced furniture people have flocked to over the last few decades. People find themselves wanting a craftsman piece, something that will stand the test of time.
Tying into its individuality is the nostalgia feelings it promotes. Those nostalgic feelings bring us a sense of comfort and security something we are all craving during the unstable world around us. Vintage furnishing also comes with a unique story, whether it is passed through generations or created through a different process. A big plus, it’s a more affordable way to furnish your home, unless you’re going for that one-of-a-kind piece with a high price tag shown on Antique Roadshow of course.
2. Grandmillennial
Taking vintage to a new level is the newly coined trend, grandmillennial which is a mash-up of granny and millennial. It refers to homey elements you may find in your grandparent’s home. “It takes a level of lived-in comfort and collectedness in a home to make it feel complete and real,” said Erin Napier of HGTV. “That’s the hallmark of a ‘more is more’ grandmillennial style in my opinion.”
3. Earth Tones
While the cool grays and whites will still be relevant, we see them start to take a step back as we all yearn for warmth and coziness going into 2021. We expect to see neutral colors like earthly greens and camels used more. Sherwin Williams’s color of the year Urbane Bronze perfectly embodies a beautiful, warm natural hue that can easily pair with whites or bolder earth tones.
4. Closed Floor Plans
Cue the shock heard round the world. Just kidding, open-style living isn’t going away but we definitely see it being adapted. In 2020 we suddenly found ourselves doing school, work, relaxing, and eating in the same space. What we learned; we need a few boundaries. More people called than ever before looking for help remodeling their basement or creating a multi-function home office or family room. Looking forward homeowners will see the value in carving out a space or specific room for those functions rather than trying to keep it all open. Defining these spaces will allow for less distraction and sound absorption.
5. Calming Ocean and Blue Hues
Perhaps it’s because many of us haven’t seen the ocean recently and are yearning for views of serene, tranquil waters or maybe it’s just its calming effect but we see blue and ocean hues on the rise in 2021. Etsy has called Sky Blue it’s color of the year.
6. Natural Materials
Along with the vintage resurgence is the comeback of natural materials especially wicker, rattan, and cane furniture. Alessandra Wood, VP of Style at Modsy says, “Natural materials such as light-toned wood, jute, leather, ceramic, and live plants will continue to furnish homes in the new year”. Layering multiple hues and finishes create a warm, inviting room with depth and texture.
7. House Plants
Can plants really be a trend? Aren’t they always in style? Well yes, but again now more than ever we want to bring calm and health into our everyday environments, and what better way to do that than vegetation.
8. Built-In Storage
You may not find this trend on every design blog but at Schloegel this is an ever-growing movement and 2020 brought it to the forefront! With work documents, school documents, and everything else at home we’ve found people need a place to put stuff and preferably not out in the open. 9. Green cabinets
Are you seeing a recurring theme in the color trends, natural and earthy which what better hue than green?! We see green being the next big color in the kitchen. Blue has reigned supreme for several years (and will still be popular) but we’re excited to see some green kitchens in our future. Look for shades in dark green, hunter green, olive green, or just about any other hue!
10. Wallpaper
Florals, geometric, grasscloth…we’re here for it all! Wallpaper connects itself well with the grandmillennial trend. It adds your personality to your home while also including layers and character.
