  • Colton’s Bathroom Is Taking Shape! – Olivia’s Big Splash Update

Last updated on May 15, 2025

Back in December, we introduced you to Colton Kinnard, our 2025 Olivia’s Big Splash Bathroom Giveaway recipient. Colton was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) at age 5 and relies on a wheelchair for mobility. His home, like many older homes, wasn’t designed with accessibility in mind—especially the bathroom, which has been a daily challenge.

We’re beyond excited to help change that by building a bathroom that’s not only fully accessible but tailored specifically to Colton’s needs.

The Original Space

Just off the kitchen, the existing bathroom had a narrow doorway, tight layout, and a standard tub/shower combo—not designed with wheelchair use in mind, making everyday tasks difficult for Colton.

A Custom Plan for Colton

Designer Kelly Summers has been working closely with the Kinnard family since December. Leslie Hatfield drew up several design options, and together they landed on a solution that turned the entire space into a wet room. The layout provides Colton with a large, open shower and the maneuverability he needs.

From there, Kelly guided the family through the selections to bring their vision to life—a warm, contemporary space. Gray tile, dried thyme green cabinetry, and matte black fixtures strike just the right balance of function and style.

Now Under Construction

With a thoughtful plan in place, the build is officially underway! Our very own Don Richeson stepped in to manage the project. These days Don typically works behind the scenes as our Production Director, but he dusted off his tool belt for this special project—and we’re so thankful for the extra care and craftsmanship he’s bringing to the job.

Demolition

First up is demolition. We demolished both the bathroom and the guest bedroom next to the bathroom. We're planning on taking some of the bedroom's square footage for the bathroom. The chimney was a fun surprise. 😳 Thank you Taylor Construction Services for your hard work doing demolition. It truly is a dirty job!

Framing & Rough Ins

Following demolition Schelp Construction got started on framing in the new bathroom and modified bedroom. Then R & R Plumbing got to work on rough ins. DeltaT Heating & Cooling helped with relocating a register and adding ductwork for the ceiling fan. Then Jason Wright Electric did their magic with electrical rough ins.

Prepping and Hanging Drywall

Don wrapped up the last of the framing, and our friends at Stoney Point came to the rescue to remove an old, unused chimney tucked into the attic corner. At some point, someone had removed the exterior portion and simply drywalled over the rest—a classic shortcut that we’d never let slide. When we open up walls, we make sure everything inside is safe, sound, and up to code.

With the framing complete and the chimney properly removed, it was time for drywall. Tom Lee and his crew stepped in to hang every sheet with care, bringing us one step closer to Colton’s new bathroom.

Stay tuned for more updates - we'll be wrapping Colton's bathroom up by the end of May and will make sure to share the fabulous transformation!

A Huge Thank You!

We couldn’t do this without our incredible trade partners. They always show up—but for this project, they’ve gone above and beyond. We’re so grateful to every single person who has donated their time, talent, or materials to help bring Colton’s bathroom to life. Thank you for being part of something truly meaningful.
