This 1970s ranch-style home located in Olathe had seen a few different interior design styles since our clients purchased it in 2000. More recently, the homeowners have been working to bring the home back to its mid-century modern aesthetic. Custom built in 1972, this home has many unique features, including an indoor pool that acts as the center of the home. Slowly, these clients have been updating different areas. For the guest bathroom, they needed some additional help. Troy Stout worked with these clients to design a more mid-century style bath, executed by Handyman Jim Clark.
The Guest Bath Before
After years of being home to three boys who have now grown up and moved out, the bathroom still carried the evidence of heavy use and efforts at DIY repairs. This space needed a full overhaul!
The red floor tile continued from the adjacent pool room and was a stark contrast in color and style from the wall tile the ran the perimeter of the space, acting as the vanity backsplash as well. The vanity was made of oak and an acrylic seashell countertop dated the space, and not in the way our clients were striving for. In an effort to tie the space together in a Moroccan style, the space was finished with a yellow paint color.
Why Handyman Services and not Design Build?
These clients liked the layout of their guest bath. Without any changes to the location of the electrical or plumbing, this was a perfect transformation for our Handyman Services team. Our team gutted the entire space and installed all new tile, drywall, a new tub and shower surround, and a new vanity and countertop. Because our Handyman Services team offers more flexibility, our clients were able to source some of their own finishes and fixtures and have them on site by the beginning of construction.
A New Mid-Century Guest Bath
After years of upkeep from heavy use and abuse, these clients wanted something that was no-fuss and easy to keep clean. The lines in this new space are much cleaner and the brighter color palette breathes freshness in to the space. The new floor tile is the star of this transformation with a bold and colorful pattern. Our clients used the vanity as another opportunity for color in navy and a faux furniture style. The new tub and shower combo was a welcomed change with new fixtures and a lower maintenance texture. To finish the space we installed all brass fixtures, removed the popcorn ceiling texture, and gave the walls a new and relaxing powder blue color.
These clients love their new guest bath! By opting to replace everything within the bathroom, our clients bought themselves many more years of use out of the space. The new aesthetic also brings them one step closer to their mid-century dream home! Have a space that doesn’t quite match your style?
