West 66th Street - Kansas City Basement Remodel

Project by Jerick Stockton

Kansas City Basement Remodel with Bar, Game Room & Full Bath

This Kansas City basement started as exactly what many unfinished basements are: open concrete floors, exposed framing, and lots of untapped potential. The homeowners wanted more than extra square footage. They wanted a place where their family could spread out, relax, play, and host. Jerick Stockton helped them create their perfect basement.

By finishing the lower level, we created a basement that works hard and feels inviting. The new space includes a kitchenette, comfortable living space, game room, dining area with TV, a stair update, and a full bathroom. One of the standout details is the set of vintage-inspired sliding bar doors that brings character and just the right amount of drama to the game room.

Now, instead of a basement that felt unfinished and underused, this home has a lower level designed for real life, from game nights and movie marathons to everyday family hangouts.

Before the Kitchen Renovation

The before photos tell the whole story. What started as an unfinished basement with exposed structure and makeshift use areas became a fully finished lower level designed for everyday living and entertaining.

From Unfinished Basement to Family Hangout

At the center of the new layout is the basement kitchenette and bar. Designed as a focal point for entertaining, the space features warm wood cabinetry, quartz countertops, floating wood shelves, and a deep green tile backsplash that adds texture and color. A stainless refrigerator and generous counter space make it easy to grab a drink, serve snacks, or host friends without running upstairs.

Around the kitchenette, the basement opens into a comfortable living area and a dining space with TV viewing, creating a natural hub for movie nights, game days, and everyday family time. Architectural touches like wood ceiling beams and slat-wrapped columns add warmth and give the large open space structure and character.

Game Room Character and Everyday Function

Just beyond the main gathering space is a dedicated game room featuring vintage-style sliding bar doors that bring personality and a touch of nostalgia to the basement. The doors create a memorable design feature while allowing the room to open to the main space or close off when needed.

The remodel also included updating the staircase to create a more welcoming transition from the main floor to the basement. Wide plank LVP flooring and recessed lighting brighten the entire lower level, helping each space feel connected while still allowing distinct zones for relaxing, entertaining, and play.

Adding a full bathroom completed the transformation, allowing the basement to function comfortably as a true living space for both everyday use and hosting guests.
