It has been too long since we’ve shared the entire story of a home renovation from start to finish and it’s time to share a remarkable project! Our designer Donna Kirsopp recently had the opportunity to work on a truly unique and gorgeous contemporary home remodel in Kansas City. We’re excited to share the journey of this project and unveil the amazing transformation!
The Vision for this Home Renovation
The homeowners were referred to Schloegel and shared their hope to reconfigure their home’s main floor while giving it a modern/contemporary design. The existing kitchen did provide ample space but it didn’t fit within their personal design aesthetic or provide some of the modern conveniences they were looking for so a complete kitchen renovation was on.
Donna worked with the homeowners to create a new layout for the main floor. The design reconfigured the main floor to include a prep kitchen in the current laundry area off the kitchen. The laundry room was relocated to the area of the old hall powder bath and expanded into a portion of the office and a new powder bathroom was added. Finally, a spacious family room off the newly designed kitchen was reconfigured for the addition of a large bar with a built in aquarium. In addition to the new layout, the homeowners wanted some unique design elements to add the ‘wow’ factor to their home. Donna helped to deliver these elements in the design as well as open up their space with more natural light. It was unfolding to be a spectacular project!

Week 1 – Demolition

Once the homeowners completed the design phase with Donna, the construction kicked off. First up, demolition. Billy and his team started the project’s demolition in the kitchen and the existing appliances were removed so the team could demo all the cabinets and floors. A temporary kitchen was created upstairs for the homeowner’s use. An insulation company was also brought in to remove the existing insulation to accommodate and properly insulate a new vaulted ceiling with skylights.

Following the kitchen, the floors across most of the main level including the entry way, living room, family room and dining room were removed. Billy and his team found a special surprise in the entry way… two layers of tile. The hearth of the fireplace was also brought down to the subfloor for refinishing. The existing powder bathroom and office walls were removed to accommodate the new spaces.
Next week the team will begin the structural work for the fish tank. They’ll also start framing the new bathroom, laundry room, feature wall, electronic storage room and skylights as well as installing the new windows.
Check back in the coming weeks as this home renovation project unfolds including some awesome details around live edge wood and designing a space to support a 200-gallon salt water fish tank.
