A condo on Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza offers an amazing lifestyle, with some of Kansas City’s best shopping, dining and entertainment at your fingertips. While these condos offer the ideal lifestyle, they can be a little short on storage space. This was the ‘case’ for a homeowner with a passion for wine…pun intended.
The homeowner was storing wine in his closet and wanted to remodel an existing space into a custom wine fridge. This would allow him to store his collection of wine properly and make an ideal space for entertainment. His hope was to have the wine fridge look like an antique piece of furniture.
In addition to building a custom wine fridge, the homeowner also wanted to add an island in the kitchen to add more cabinet storage. Nina and Debby, both Schloegel Design Remodel Designers, were excited about the challenge.
They decided to turn an unused display area into the custom wine fridge and were able to achieve the antique furniture look by adding custom mahogany paneled doors to the front of the wine fridge. Nina and Debby were able to build the doors to accommodate the existing arch space making it feel more like a piece of furniture rather than a refrigerator. The piece has two actual fridges and each 24-inch-wide fridge has its own dual temperature control. The fridge stores 204 bottles of wine, which cleared up some much-needed closet space.
The island was created to provide more storage for small appliances, conceal the garbage and store the homeowner’s collection of cookbooks. Nina and Debby added the raised glass area to provide additional seating while still keeping the space feeling open and airy.
The floors were sanded and given a medium stain color, lightening up the entire space and tying in the new white island.
The homeowner is excited to entertain in his updated space and now has plenty of wine ready at the perfect temperature.
