At Schloegel Design Remodel, remodeling isn’t just what we do, it’s what we care deeply about. And over the last 45+ years serving Kansas City (and now the Lake of the Ozarks), we’ve built something we believe is pretty special.
But it didn’t happen by accident. It’s rooted in a better way of doing things, one that’s shaped how we approach every project from day one.

Schloegel's Design-Build Remodeling Process
Why Design-Build Works so Well
To really understand what sets us apart, it helps to start with a simple question: What is design-build remodeling?
At its core, design-build means everything, design, planning, and construction, is handled under one roof, by one team, with one shared goal: delivering an exceptional experience for the client from start to finish.
It sounds simple. But the way we do it—and the reason we do it—goes back to the very beginning.
It Started With a Problem
Back in 1980, our founder Jake Schloegel bought a small contracting company for $300. This included a wooden toolbox, two ladders, and a vision for something better.
It didn’t take long for him to notice a pattern.
Homeowners were investing thousands into architectural plans that captured their dream… only to find out later that the cost to build it wasn’t realistic.
Designers and contractors were working separately, budgets weren’t aligned, and clients were left frustrated, disappointed, and stuck.

So, Jake asked a simple question: What if we brought it all together?
What if design and construction worked as one team, from the very beginning, with the same values, the same communication, and the same responsibility? No more pointing fingers or leaving a job mid-construction.
That idea became our design-build remodeling model. And more than four decades later, it’s still the foundation of everything we do.
Not All “Design-Build” is the Same
Today, you’ll hear a lot of companies say they’re design-build. But here’s the difference:
We are a true one-stop shop.
We don’t outsource your design to an outside architect or engineer. We don’t hand off plans and hope for the best. Our architecture team, designers, and production teams are all part of the same in-house team—working together every day, collaborating in real time. We sit in the same meetings and see each other in the office and on the jobsite regularly.
That alignment matters.
Because when everyone is under one roof, communication is clearer. Expectations are aligned. And ultimately, as a client, your experience is smoother, more predictable, and a whole lot less stressful.
Of course, depending on the scope of your project, we do bring in trusted trade partners for things like tile or hardwood flooring, but they’re held to the exact same standards as our internal team.
Because at the end of the day, delivering the ultimate client experience isn’t just a goal, it’s literally our standard.
What That Looks Like for You
We’ve refined our process over the years into three clear phases—each designed to eliminate guesswork and keep everything moving forward with intention.
Step 1: Design & Planning
This is where everything begins—and where our process truly stands apart.
We start by getting to know you, your goals, your style, how you live in your home.

From there, our in-house architect and design team create thoughtful plan options that don’t just look good, but function beautifully.
This is what we mean by design done right.
We think through the details others might miss, like how doors swing, where appliances live, how people move through a space, so your home feels as good as it looks. It’s about flow. It’s about intention. It’s about creating a space where life just works. That’s why we plan for everything from demolition and framing to electrical, plumbing, and cabinets. We also create elevations to show how a space will look head-on, and 3D renderings to help you visualize how colors, textures, and finishes will come together, so you know exactly how your home will feel before construction even begins.

And just as importantly, we talk about budget and timeline early.
Before construction ever begins, your selections, scope, and pricing are clearly defined. Which leads to one of our most important promises: No surprises.
Step 2: Construction
Once everything is planned, documented, and aligned, we move into construction with a clear roadmap.
You’ll be introduced to your full team. This consists of your Project Director, Project Manager, Designer, and you’ll know exactly who to go to every step of the way.
We communicate consistently. We meet weekly as a team weekly with our clients on the jobsite to go over progress updates and allow for questions.
And through tools like BuilderTrend, you’ll always know what’s happening in your home. In the app you can view your project calendar to see when each step will start and end. Our team also uploads daily logs which include photos of the progress and a list of the things they completed each day. This is a great way to keep everyone on the same page throughout the remodel.

Weekly meeting with a client to confirm outlet location, prepping for where tv will be hung.

Remodeling can feel disruptive and we get that. But our job is to make the experience as smooth, organized, and enjoyable as possible.
Step 3: Post-Construction
When your project wraps up, we walk through everything with you to make sure it’s exactly right. And because we pride ourselves on reliability, 97% of our projects are completed on time. At this final walkthrough, you’ll also receive our two-year warranty, so you can feel confident long after the dust has settled.
And even then, we don’t disappear.
From handyman services to future projects, we’re here for the long haul.

To us, this isn’t just a project—it’s a relationship.
Why It Works
Design-build isn’t just about efficiency—it’s about trust.
It’s about knowing your budget is respected.
It’s about having a team that communicates well.
It’s about feeling confident in every decision along the way.
It’s also about people.
We’ve been honored to be named a Best Place to Work in Kansas City for multiple years, and we don’t take that lightly. It reflects the kind of team we’ve built, talented, collaborative, and genuinely invested in doing great work together.

And when your team enjoys what they do and who they do it with, it shows, in the experience we deliver and the spaces we create.
We’re proud that our team members stick around, with an average tenure of 6.5 years, well above the industry average of 2–4 years. This means when you work with us, you’re working with people who care deeply, are invested in what they do, and are experts in the industry.
From Kansas City to the Lake
For over 45 years, we’ve been proud to serve homeowners across Kansas City. And in recent years, we’ve expanded that same design-build approach to the Lake of the Ozarks, bringing the same process, the same team, and the same commitment to excellence.

Whether it’s a full-scale remodel, an addition, a deck or dock upgrade, or even a smaller project, we approach every job with the same care and intention.
More Than a Process—It’s Our Purpose
Our purpose is simple: To inspire people to love their home.
And we believe the way we do that matters just as much as the final result.
That means being innovative.
It means being engaged.
It means staying optimistic, even when challenges arise.
And yes—it means having a little fun along the way!
Because remodeling isn’t just about creating a beautiful space.
It’s about creating an experience that feels just as good.

Frequently Asked Design-Build Remodeling Questions
What is design-build remodeling?
Design-build remodeling means your design, planning, and construction are all handled by one team under one roof. Instead of hiring separate architects, designers, and contractors, everything is aligned from the start, creating a smoother process and better overall experience.
How is design-build different from traditional remodeling?
In a traditional model, design and construction happen separately, which can lead to miscommunication, delays, and unexpected costs. With design-build, our team works together from day one, so your design, budget, and scope stay aligned throughout the entire project.
Why does design-build help avoid surprises?
Because we plan everything upfront. Your design, selections, and scope of work are finalized before construction begins, which means your investment is clearly defined early on. That’s how we deliver on our promise of no surprises.
Do you use outside architects or designers?
No—we have an in-house team of designers and a degreed architect who collaborate closely with our project team. That’s what allows us to truly be a one-stop shop and deliver a more seamless experience.
Do you work with subcontractors?
Yes, depending on the scope of the project, we partner with trusted trade specialists for certain elements like tile or hardwood flooring. Every trade partner we work with is held to the same high standards as our internal team.
What does “design done right” mean?
It means we’re intentional about every detail, from how your space looks to how it functions. We think through flow, layout, and how you actually live in your home, so everything works together seamlessly.
What can I expect during the remodeling process?
You can expect clear communication, a dedicated team, and a structured process from start to finish. From design and planning to construction and post-project follow-up, we guide you every step of the way.
What is the difference between remodeling and renovation?
Remodeling and renovation are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings in the home improvement industry. A renovation project refers to restoring or repairing a structure to its previous or improved condition. It often involves updating and repairing an existing structure to enhance its appeal, functionality, or efficiency. Remodeling, on the other hand, involves changing the structure or form of a space. It's a more extensive process that often involves significant changes to the layout or design of a room or house.
How long does a design-build project take?
Timelines vary depending on the size and complexity of the project, but because we plan everything in advance, we’re able to provide a clear schedule before construction begins, and stick to it. If your project is larger and involves moving lots of walls or unique custom features, it will likely take a few months once construction has started. We are able to complete smaller handyman projects or refreshes in a number of weeks or just days for small repairs, depending on scope of work. We've also had larger whole-home projects or additions take over 9 months. It really depends on the size and complexity of the project, and our team will be up front about timelines with you from the start.
Do you offer remodeling services at the Lake of the Ozarks?
Yes! In addition to serving Kansas City for over 45 years, we’ve expanded our design-build services to the Lake of the Ozarks, bringing the same team, process, and client experience to lake homeowners.
What happens after my project is complete?
We’ll walk through your finished space with you to make sure everything meets our standards, and yours. You’ll also receive our two-year warranty, and our handyman team is always here for ongoing support.
What types of projects do you take on?
Everything from kitchens, bathrooms, basements, or whole-home remodels and additions to smaller projects through our handyman services team. No matter the size, we bring the same process and attention to detail to every project.
How do I know if Schloegel is the right fit for my project?
Our initial meeting is designed to get to know you, your goals, and your project. From there, we can determine together if we’re a great fit—because the right partnership makes all the difference.
