Frequently Asked Questions About Remodeling in Kansas City

Will your crew make a mess of my home?

Remodeling is active work, but protecting your home is part of our process from day one.

Before work begins, we set up floor protection, entry mats in nearby spaces, zipper walls to help separate work zones, vent covers, and air filtration during drywall and painting. We also cover furniture, appliances, and other areas as needed.

Our crew cleans up at the end of each day and does a more detailed cleanup before the weekend. We also keep walkways and surrounding areas as safe and clear as possible so your family can move through your home during the project

Ann Lindboe: "This was the cleanest construction crew I have ever had!"

Will I feel comfortable having your team in my home?

We understand that remodeling means inviting people into your home for weeks, and often months. Trust matters just as much as craftsmanship.

Every Schloegel team member goes through a background check and an extensive interview process. We look for skill, experience, and character because the person working in your home should be someone you feel comfortable seeing every day. Our trade partners are also carefully vetted, so the same level of care extends to everyone involved in your project.

Our average team member has been with Schloegel for 6.5 years, which means you are working with experienced people who know our process, our standards, and how to care for clients well.

One of the most common things we hear after a project wraps up is how much homeowners miss having their project manager around. Sometimes the pets miss them most.

Yaroslav Nazarenko: the crew would "close doors softly when the kids are sleeping."

What happens if you open the walls and find a problem?

Older homes can hide a lot behind the walls, from outdated wiring and plumbing to framing issues, settling, or past work that was not done correctly. We do our best to plan for the unplanned.

For many older homes, we may recommend an investigative demo before the full project begins. This helps us understand what we are working with and reduce surprises once construction is underway. Even then, some unknowns cannot be discovered until walls, floors, or ceilings are opened.

If we do uncover something unexpected, we will walk you through the issue, explain the recommended solutions, and review any additional costs before moving forward. Nothing gets addressed without a conversation first.

While hidden conditions can happen, less than 3% of our projects go over budget because of these types of change orders.

Renee Michael: a small bath update "turned more complicated in our 100 year old house but the handyman team handled it with ease."

I've had a bad experience with a contractor before. Why will this be different?

Unfortunately, we hear this often. Many of our clients come to us after a remodeling experience that left them frustrated, confused, or unsure who to trust.

That is exactly why one of our brand promises is to deliver the ultimate client experience. For us, that starts long before construction begins. Our design process helps define your project upfront, so you have a clear scope, contract, budget, and schedule before work gets underway.

You will also have a designer engaged from your first meeting through the end of your project, along with a full team under one roof and working from the same plan. During construction, you can expect a set schedule, weekly meetings, daily Buildertrend updates, and a promised finish-by date.

And when your project is complete, we stand behind our work with a two-year craftsmanship warranty. Schloegel has been part of the Kansas City community for more than 45 years, and we are not going anywhere.

Jean Nobile: "After 18 months of incompetent electricians and other professionals..." then chose Schloegel.

How do you protect my home during the work?

Construction kicks up dust, but our goal is to keep the work contained and protect the areas of your home that are not part of the project.

Before construction begins, we put protection in place based on the scope of work. That may include floor coverings, entry mats, zipper walls to separate work zones, vent covers, air filtration during drywall and painting, and covers for furniture, appliances, or nearby spaces as needed.

Our crew cleans up at the end of each day and does a more detailed cleanup before the weekend. We also keep walkways as clear and safe as possible so your family can continue moving through your home during the remodel.

Cleanliness and respect for your home are things our clients often mention in reviews, and they are an important part of how we work.

Laura Lambert, "left the workspace clean every day,"

What happens if costs go over the estimate?

Before construction begins, your project is fully designed, specified, and priced so you know the cost before work starts. Once you sign your construction contract, you are in the driver’s seat when it comes to changes that may affect the budget.

Most projects that go over the original contract amount do so because a client chooses to add scope, make changes, or select different materials during the project. And that is okay. We want you to love your home when the work is complete, so if something changes along the way, we will walk you through the options and pricing before moving forward.

Hidden issues can also come up, especially in older homes. If that happens, we will explain the issue, review the recommended solution, and share any additional costs. Nothing moves forward without your approval. Less than 3% of our projects go over budget because of hidden conditions or other non-client-driven change orders.

"On time, on schedule, on budget. Cleaned up after themselves daily."Brian P.

Can you work on older Kansas City homes?

Yes, and we love working on older Kansas City homes. From Brookside and Waldo to the Plaza and other historic neighborhoods, we have remodeled homes across the city, including many that are 100 years old.

Older homes have character worth preserving, but they can also come with surprises behind the walls, like outdated wiring, aging plumbing, settling, or past repairs that need attention. With more than 45 years of remodeling experience in Kansas City, our team knows how to plan for those possibilities and approach older homes with care.

When needed, we may recommend an investigative demo before the full project begins. This helps us better understand what is behind the walls, reduce surprises, and plan the project more accurately. If something unexpected still comes up, we will walk you through the issue, explain the options, and review any additional costs before moving forward.

"A small bathroom update turned more complicated in our 100 year old house, but the handyman team handled it with ease." — Renee M.

How long does a typical remodel take?

It depends on the size and scope of the project. A handyman visit may take as little as two hours, while a bathroom remodel is typically a month or more depending on the complexity. A larger kitchen, addition, or whole-home remodel can take several months or more.

Every Schloegel project is unique, so your schedule is built around the specific work being done in your home. Before construction begins, we will review the schedule with you so you know what to expect and when.

Once the schedule is set, we take it seriously. In fact, 97% of our projects finish on time.

"They showed up each day on time, kept us posted on progress, and finished the job when promised."Susan & Scott K.

Do you offer financing for remodeling projects?
