We introduced you to our 2020 Big Splash recipient, Mickey Hinrichs late last year. Mickey was born with multiple genetic mutations. He has a diagnosis of Phelan McDermid Syndrome, along with CP, autism, global hypotonia, Epilepsy, and developmental delay. Today, at 10 years old, Mickey loves to crawl and play but requires assistance in most of his daily needs.
Mickey enjoys books, flashcards, music, and cartoons with Sesame Street and Frozen being a cut above the rest. One of his greatest enjoyments is bath time where he can play in the water.
We revealed his new bathroom last week! Thank you Linda Wagar of Fox4 News for sharing the Hinrichs story!
Previous Bathrooms
Given Mickey’s favorite activity is playing in the bathtub, his existing bathroom scenario leaves quite a bit to be desired. Due to the bathroom’s tight space getting Mickey in and out of the tub is a safety concern. In order to give Mickey and his mother, Erika, the room they need in the bathroom we decided to convert two bathrooms that were next to each other into one. One bathroom was in the primary bedroom and the other was their hall bathroom. Both bathrooms were quite small and didn’t allow any space for mobility. The bathrooms were both quite dated and previous plumbing issues left the tile in disrepair.
New Bathroom
Combining the two bathrooms provided enough space for both a zero-entry shower and a large tub. The tub has a whirlpool system so Mickey can enjoy his favorite time of day even more! The large zero-entry shower fulfills the entire family’s needs and also will accommodate future needs Mickey may have. It has a large amount of space in front of the tub will finally allow space to get Mickey ready in the bathroom instead of taking him down the hall. It’s the perfect plan to suit the family’s needs now and into the future.
Erika, Mickey’s mom, and Kelly picked out beautiful farmhouse finishes to give this accessible bathroom a style all its own. The vanity cabinet provided by Crown Cabinetry is pained SW6192 Coastal Plain and topped with Q Quartz in arctic white provided by Legendary stone.
The faucets, provided by Grandview Winnelson, are all from the Delta Stryke line and are a matte black finish. Grandview Winnelson also provided the fabulous Whirlpool tub, sink, toilet, and accessories. The knobs Ascendra Top Knobs pulls and knobs are also matte black.
An amazing tile rug is done in Milestone Charleston Multi-Color matte 3×36 porcelain tile and surrounded by the same tile in white matte. The shower walls and tub backsplash are Bianco 3×12 subway and the cool pebble tile shower floor is Emser Venetian Pastel Flat Pebble blend. All the stunning tile was graciously donated from ProSource. Apex Tile donated their talent in installing all the tiles.
Olathe Glass provided and installed the shower glass panel and Westport Glass provided and installed the niche glass shelves.
Kansas City Millwork provided all the new trim in the bathroom as well as the new pocket door and entry door.
McCray Lumber donated all the lumber and materials for the construction.
Jason Wright Electric not only supplied and did all the work in the bathroom. They also discovered the Hinrichs’ electrical panel was having issues and covered the entire replacement.
Inception Plumbing provided all the plumbing work for the new tub, shower, toilet, and sink.
Air Care Heating and Cooling provided all the HVAC work to ensure the bathroom has heating and cooling.
Vaught Roofing helped us complete the required roofing work for installing proper venting. Hayes Insulation helped us make sure the bathroom would stay warm during the winter months and cool during the summer months. Lee Drywall and Plaster drywalled in the new bathroom.
Finally, Schloegel Paint Services provided all the paintings in the bathroom.
