  • Designed for Real Life: A Bright Kansas City Kitchen Remodel for a Busy Family

Last updated on April 23, 2026

This Kansas City kitchen remodel is a great example of how thoughtful planning and intentional design can completely change the way a home lives. Rather than simply refreshing finishes, our team reimagined the entire main floor—improving flow, maximizing usable space, and shaping a layout that truly supports a busy family’s everyday rhythm.

These clients are actually repeat Schloegel clients. We previously remodeled their kitchen in their former home, but as their family grew, they made a move just one street over—and brought us along with them for the next chapter.

As a result, what once felt cramped, choppy, and a little disconnected is now open, welcoming, and full of natural light. Soft powder blue maple cabinetry sets the tone with a fresh, airy feel, while crisp white countertops and a bright backsplash keep the palette clean and elevated. Meanwhile, darker, more traditional wood flooring anchors the space, adding warmth and contrast that balance the lighter finishes. Altogether, the design strikes that sweet spot between classic and modern—layered, livable, and thoughtfully tailored to how this family actually lives every day.

Existing Conditions & Client Needs

To begin with, the original layout of this home presented several challenges. The kitchen and garage entry created a congested pathway, especially during busy mornings. As the family moved in and out of the home, the traffic flow cut directly through the kitchen workspace, which made every day routines feel chaotic.

Meanwhile, the family struggled with a cramped eating area tucked into a hallway near the front entry. Not only did this feel disconnected, but it also limited their ability to comfortably gather as a family.

At the same time, the only main-floor bedroom was underutilized and there was awkward dead space in the hallway near the powder bath and this bedroom. Our clients knew there had to be a better way to use this space.

Because of this, the clients came to us with a clear goal: make better use of the existing square footage while improving flow, storage, and overall functionality. Additionally, with young kids and full schedules, they needed a layout that prioritized ease and efficiency.

Of course, a transformation like this doesn’t happen without a strong team behind it.

Brenda Axman, the designer, guided the clients through every step of the process—from initial concepts to final selections. At the same time, Project Director Andy Gower ensured that construction stayed on track and aligned with the design vision. Because of their collaboration, the project moved seamlessly from planning to completion.

Vision & Design Direction

From the start, our team focused on creating a layout that works with the family’s lifestyle instead of against it. Because of that clarity, every design decision was made ahead of construction to support both budget and timeline, ensuring a smooth and intentional process from day one. This is all part of our design done right and no surprises promise. You can read more about our unique design-build remodeling process here

At the same time, aesthetics guided the design direction. The client’s love for vintage art and decor helped shape a space that feels layered, personal, and full of character. She intentionally curates her home with pieces from estate sales and vintage shops, always finding unique treasures and meaningful details. With the client's eclectic, creative style leading the way, Brenda truly enjoyed collaborating with these repeat Schloegel clients to bring their vision to life. As a result, we leaned into a transitional design approach that thoughtfully blends classic details with modern updates—anchored by their clear request for blue kitchen cabinets.

Most notably, the W.W. Wood Products Aspect Maple cabinetry in the Stardew finish introduces a soft, powdery blue tone that instantly brightens the kitchen. In addition, creamy Ainsley Cambria Quartz countertops and a clean, light classic backsplash keep the palette bright. Meanwhile, the darker stained flooring adds contrast and depth, grounding the lighter finishes and reinforcing a timeless foundation. Altogether, these elements work in harmony to create a kitchen that feels balanced, intentional, and beautifully tailored to the way this family lives.

Space Planning & Layout Changes

Once the vision was established, our architecture team got to work rethinking the layout.

demo floor plans

First, we eliminated the underused extra bedroom (bedroom #2 on the above plans) on the main floor. By opening up this space, we were able to create a dedicated dining area that feels intentional rather than squeezed into a hallway.

Next, we addressed the traffic flow issues. We relocated the powder bath entrance so that it now sits near the garage entry through the newly created dining area. Although the powder bath footprint stayed the same, this strategic change made a significant impact.

As a result:

  • The kitchen gained valuable wall/counter space
  • The previous door to the garage—once cutting into the kitchen—was removed
  • Movement through the home became more natural and efficient

Ultimately, these changes transformed the main floor into a cohesive, functional layout that supports everyday life.

Construction Process & Problem Solving

With all decisions finalized, construction moved forward with clarity and purpose.

To begin, we fully demoed the existing kitchen. At the same time, we removed walls to open up the former bedroom and reframe the new layout.

From there, our team handled framing, drywall, and insulation installation and prepared the space for finishes.

The team then patched in the hardwood floors, sanded it all, and added a stain to match the original floors.

Next, we installed the cabinetry, followed by a standout backsplash detail that extends all the way to the ceiling around the sink window. Not only does this draw the eye upward, but it also adds a polished, custom feel to the space.

Meanwhile, the powder bath became a bold design moment. We installed Rifle Paper Co.’s peacock wallpaper in navy, instantly transforming the room from basic to unforgettable. Because of this, even a small space now delivers major personality. Looking for more bold powder bath design ideas? • Soft powder blue maple cabinets create a fresh, light and airy inspired focal point
  • Creamy Ainsley Cambria Quartz countertops and backsplash reflect natural light and enhance the airy feel
  • The farmhouse sink grounds the kitchen with a warm, homey feel while also delivering strong everyday functionality
  • Brushed nickel cabinet hardware and faucet for a timeless feel

The built-in bench now creates a dedicated moment in the space—a place to sit and sip morning coffee or tie your shoes before heading out the door—rather than functioning as part of the kitchen table seating like it did before. With this new layout, the footprint feels more open and intentional, giving our clients significantly more usable space and eliminating that previously cluttered, cramped feeling.

By relocating the garage entry, we were able to open up valuable square footage for additional counter and cabinet space in the kitchen, something our clients are already appreciating in their day-to-day routine. As a result, the kitchen now feels complete and cohesive, rather than choppy or interrupted like it did originally.

In addition, the new breakfast room comfortably accommodates a large kitchen table, with an easy, natural flow connecting the kitchen, dining area, powder bath, and garage entry. This is what thoughtful design looks like in action—the space simply makes sense, and our clients can already feel the difference.

The finished powder bath strikes the perfect balance between classic character and vintage charm while still feeling fresh and thoughtfully updated.

The original basketweave tile brings a timeless foundation, while the pedestal sink adds a subtle retro nod that our client absolutely loves. The patterned wallpaper introduces a playful yet elevated statement, the design is pretty, but the deeper color palette gives it a bold edge. Even the smallest details were considered, like navy outlet covers that quietly blend into the wallpaper so nothing feels out of place. It’s a cool, cohesive space where every detail works together, and that level of intentionality is exactly what we’re all about.

Altogether, the home feels bright, balanced, and beautifully tailored to everyday life. Throughout the main floor, new elements seamlessly connect with the home’s original character, while layered shades of blue create a cohesive and intentional color story. As a result, each space flows naturally into the next, both visually and functionally, supporting how the family lives day to day.

Ultimately, the entire main level works together in a way that feels effortless, cohesive, and exactly aligned with what our clients were hoping to achieve.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kitchen Remodeling

How long does a Kansas City kitchen remodel typically take?
Generally, the construction phase of a kitchen remodel can take anywhere from 8 to 20 weeks depending on the scope. However, detailed pre-planning—like in this project—helps keep timelines predictable. Before construction begins, we enter the design phase which typically lasts around 8 weeks. This is where all the measuring, planning, design drawings and selections happen. Read more about our process here

Why is layout planning so important before construction?
Layout planning sets the foundation for everything that follows. By making these decisions early, you directly influence cost, functionality, and the overall success of the project—while also avoiding surprises during construction. Our team guides you through each detail, from choosing where drawer stacks work better than cabinet doors to selecting smart interior features like silverware dividers, lazy Susans, built-in utensil canisters, spice racks, and deep drawers for pots and pans. With a thoughtful layout in place, the entire space works more efficiently and feels tailored to how you live every day.

Can I remodel my kitchen without changing the footprint?
Yes—you absolutely can. Whether your project calls for simple updates or a more involved transformation, we tailor the approach to fit your needs.

If your kitchen just needs a refresh, like new countertops, cabinet updates or painting existing cabinetry, new fixtures, tile, or a backsplash, our handyman team can take care of it efficiently. If the scope involves multiple trade partners or a longer timeline, you’ll work with a dedicated Project Director and Project Manager through our Design-Build team. In both cases, you’ll have access to a designer who will guide you through selections and ensure everything comes together seamlessly.

By reworking the layout—even in small ways—we can significantly improve flow, function, and overall usability, just like we did in this project, however that isn't always required for a space that feels brand new. Our team will walk through your space with you, evaluate what’s working and what’s not, and recommend thoughtful updates that align with your goals. With the right plan in place, you can achieve a fresh, functional kitchen without expanding the footprint.

Is it worth removing a bedroom to expand living space?
It depends on your lifestyle. In this case, the unused bedroom was better utilized as a dining area, which added more day-to-day value for the family. Our team would be happy to talk through pros and cons and what's possible for your home!

What cabinet colors are trending in Kansas City kitchen remodels?
While white kitchens continue to be a go-to for their timeless appeal, we’re seeing a strong shift toward deeper, more expressive tones. Moody blues, rich greens, and earthy hues are especially popular right now, bringing warmth, depth, and character into the space. We’ve incorporated a wide range of blue and green cabinetry in recent projects, and many clients are also embracing the natural look of white oak for its softness and organic feel.

That said, trends are just a starting point. We design each kitchen around how our clients live and what they’re naturally drawn to. The goal is always to create a space that feels personal, functional, and reflective of your style—something you’ll love not just now, but for years to come. Check out our kitchen gallery for more cabinet color inspiration!

How do I choose between modern and traditional design?
You don’t have to choose just one. A transitional approach blends both styles, giving you a timeless look that still feels current.
