  • Designer Turned Client Week Five: Communication During a Remodel

Last updated on September 11, 2025

We hope you’ve enjoyed keeping up with Lindsay’s Designer Turned Client remodel as much as we have! If you missed our previous posts, here's Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, and Week 4. This week we’re going to highlight what communication between clients, and our team looks like throughout the remodeling process!

Pre-Construction

Our process starts with design and planning. Since Lindsay is both the designer and client for this project, she did a lot of the behind-the-scenes things herself. Lindsay worked alongside Leslie Hatfield and the rest of the Schloegel architecture team to come up with design drawings and renderings.

In between the design phase and the construction phase is the handoff meeting and then the pre-construction meeting. The handoff meeting occurs at our office in Waldo and is an internal meeting that ensures everyone on our team is on the same page before things kick off.   In this case the meeting involved Lindsay, Jeff Penrose, and Don Richeson our Director of Office Production.

Next was the pre-construction meeting which took place at Lindsay's home. Jeff and Lindsay talked through logistics with Lindsay's husband. This included discussing things like if our team should enter through the front door versus garage door, where kids and pets will be throughout the project and how our team should interact with them, all the way to dumpster placement and parking instructions.

Weekly Meetings

For every week during the construction phase of the project we have a weekly check-in meeting. This involves the designer, project manager, and project director meeting weekly with our clients in the home to review project updates, follow up on action items, and keep the everything on track.  Of course, if other things come up in between meetings, we're all ears and ready to jump on a call or stop by the home if necessary.

BuilderTrend

What about day-to-day communication or documenting the little things? Our team uses BuilderTrend internally and externally to communicate during the remodeling process. Through BuilderTrend, we provide our clients and team with a detailed schedule, so everyone knows what to expect each day. This is accessible online or with a mobile app that is super easy to navigate.

On top of this, each day there is a summary of work and photos of progress in the "daily logs" section of BuilderTrend. This is a great way for our clients to review what was done when it’s convenient for them. It ensures everything is documented and helps our team and sub-contractors stay on schedule. It's the project manager's job to keep BuilderTrend up to date and make note of who all was on site and what they did, this includes the sub-contractors we work with.

It's important for us to make sure our clients feel seen and heard throughout the process. Our weekly meetings paired with our usage of BuilderTrend help us ensure that no detail goes unnoticed and if a problem arises it get solved quickly.

Stay Tuned

Next week we’ll be back with some drywall and flooring updates! As always, stay up to date with the latest on our projects over on our Instagram. Looking for the rest of Lindsay’s project blog posts? Find them here.
