  • Exploring Different Types of Bathroom Remodels: From Cosmetic Updates to Full Gut Renovations

Last updated on March 4, 2024

A bathroom remodel can mean many different things from a full gut remodel to a cosmetic update. Today we’re going to break down the different types of remodels. It’s important to keep in mind that bathroom remodels can vary significantly based on the scope, scale, budget, and specific goals of the renovation project. Regardless of type a bathroom remodel is still a significant undertaking and it’s important to decide which will work best for your lifestyle and budget.

Here are several 6 types of bathroom remodels that homeowners commonly consider:

1. Cosmetic or Surface-Level Remodel

If your existing bathroom layout works for your needs but its style is showing its age this might be the bathroom remodel for your needs. A cosmetic bathroom remodel involves making superficial changes without altering the layout or structure of the bathroom. It may include updating fixtures, replacing tiles, painting, and changing hardware to refresh the appearance. This type of bathroom remodel is more budget friendly as your not paying for large electrical or plumbing changes.

This Leawood bathroom remodel is a great example of a cosmetic bathroom remodel. Our clients wanted to give the dark bathroom a refresh while keeping their budget. We elected to keep the tub, tile floor and existing vanity. We were able to repaint the vanity and change the pulls. Additionally we installed new sinks, faucets, and light fixtures. The new quartz coutnertop and large mirror really brighten the entire space and make it feel larger. Finally a fresh coat of paint across the entire bathroom completes the bathroom remodel.

2. Fixture Upgrade

Another bathroom remodeling option that’s a little more budget friendly. This type of bathroom remodel focuses primarily on replacing outdated or worn fixtures such as faucets, showerheads, sinks, toilets, or lighting fixtures. It keeps the same bathroom layout but can drastically change the look. Upgrading to more modern or energy-efficient fixtures can give the bathroom a fresh look.

We love this Overland Park bathroom remodel. Everything stayed in the same location, which helps cut down on plumbing and electrical costs but we updated everything else in the bathroom. New cabinetry, tile, sinks, faucets, mirrors, lighting, shower, and tub make this primary bathroom the ultimate in luxury!

3. Layout Alteration

In a layout alteration bathroom remodel the existing layout is reconfigured by moving fixtures, walls, or plumbing. It could include changing the position of the bathtub, shower, toilet, or vanity to improve functionality and space utilization.

Our clients had a beautiful looking bathroom, but it wasn’t functioning for their lifestyle. They didn’t use the large soaking tub and the shower felt compact. For this Leawood bathroom remodel we removed the soaking tub and shower walls giving us space for a longer shower and additional vanity. We updated everything else in this bathroom remodel too!

4. Partial Remodel

A partial remodel concentrates on renovating specific areas of the bathroom, such as the shower enclosure, bathtub, or vanity area. This type of remodel allows for targeted improvements while not overhauling the entire space.

This Kansas City bathroom remodel is a perfect example of a partial remodel. Our client liked their tiled floor and existing layout but not their vanity situation…or lack thereof. We removed the individual wall sinks and installed a stunning floating dual vanity with a tile backsplash and built in lighting.

5. Full Gut Renovation

A comprehensive overhaul involving stripping the bathroom down to its bare walls and floor. It includes replacing everything from plumbing and electrical systems to fixtures, flooring, walls, and ceilings. This type of remodel offers the most flexibility in design and functionality.

Nearly everything in this Prairie Village Primary Bath wasn’t working for our clients - the awkward bathroom shape, lack of storage, and dark shower. A completely new design required taking the bathroom down to the studs and doing a full bathroom renovation. The result is classic, functional, and beautiful.

6. Accessible or Aging-in-Place Remodel

Aimed at making the bathroom more accommodating for individuals with mobility challenges or homeowners looking to age comfortably in their homes. This could include features like grab bars, walk-in showers, wider doorways, or wheelchair accessibility.
