Jake,

We bought a house with 2 gas fireplaces and are wondering if they can be enlarged. How involved would the project be?

Sue

Sue,

Assuming these fireplaces are the pre-fabricated type, the only way to enlarge them is to install a new unit.  This can be quite involved.  It would require removing most of the fireplace surround, such as the mantel, tile and maybe the hearth.  A larger unit may require a larger flue, and this might affect the chimney. Your best bet is to have a company that sells fireplaces take a look at your unit to determine even if you can enlarge the existing unit.  They should be able to provide an estimate for you.  Good Luck.
