Houzz recently shared an article about preparing for kitchen construction and we loved seeing one of our projects in the article! The project picture (shown below) is one from the Wyandotte House, a Craftsman-style home in Kansas City that Kelly Summers helped redesign.
The article “4 Steps to Get Ready for Kitchen Construction” gives some great tips on how to prepare for your upcoming kitchen remodel. We thought it would be fun to look at the steps and how Schloegel helps you with each of them in your project.
1. Make a List of Items You Need to Have Onsite When Construction Begins
We couldn’t agree with this more. It is absolutely necessary to have materials on site on or before they’re necessary in the process. But you don’t have to keep a list or track them. We do that!
Our Design Process ensures we have identified all your selections and the necessary materials for your project. Your Project Designer, Project Manager, and Lead Carpenter will make sure the materials are ordered and manage the delivery. Not only that but we take it a step further. Your Lead Carpenter will open the materials when they arrive for quality assurance. If anything arrives damaged or broken, they work to get a rush replacement. Our years of experience have shown one small defect can hold up a project timeline which is why that extra step is essential.
2. Establish Expectations with Your Contractor
Rebekah Zaveloff of Kitchen Lab Interiors did a great job covering a few of the things we find essential to the success of our projects. Yet again our Design Process helps set expectations and ensures our team can stick to the schedule. Our Production team works very hard to schedule each and every job as accurately as possible. Each job has a start and end date, which we stick to (unless there is a large unforeseen circumstance or large changes are made mid-project). The timeline is published at the job site and every single person involved in the project knows the schedule.
Clients are able to check the status and photos of their project every day on BuilderTrend, a website that our Leads update with activity daily. And finally, we hold weekly status meetings with the homeowners, designer, lead carpenter, and project manager. The meeting allows us to provide status, finalize decisions, and ensure everyone remains on the same page.
We also will send a letter out to your neighbors letting them know there will be a construction project in their neighborhood. The letter contains the Lead Carpenter’s information and encourages them to call Schloegel with any concerns or issues throughout the project.
We treat your home like it’s ours and that means ensuring it remains as clean as possible. Before any demolition begins, we set up dust containment materials. Our crew cleans up the site each night with an additional clean on Fridays before leaving for the weekend.
3. Empty Out Your Cabinets
While our team doesn’t empty out your cabinets, we do have resources that can help! Bee Organized, a locally owned organization company, is a great resource! They can help you go through all your kitchen items, determine what to get rid of, what to keep, and help you carefully pack away what you won’t need during the remodel. Once your remodel is complete, they can help you put everything into your beautiful new kitchen. What’s better than having a new kitchen that is completely organized?
4. Set Up a Temporary Kitchen
Living through a remodel isn’t always ideal but making sure you have a temporary place to prepare meals will help! While our team can’t create a whole other kitchen, they can help relocate a fridge and in some instances a temporary sink. Throw in a microwave and a hot plate and you have yourself a usable kitchen. Having an organized temporary place to prepare food and snacks will make a world of difference in your day to day life throughout the remodel.
