Kansas City has some of the best architectural homes in the U.S., we’ll gladly debate this with you. 😊 One of our all-time favorite styles is the Tudors found in Brookside. KC Today has a short but sweet article on their history "The art behind Kansas City’s historic homes: Tudor Revival". So, we get pretty excited when we get to work on one of them which was the case with this kitchen project. Here’s the story of injecting much deserved character into this charming Brookside Tudor home. See how Megan Bringman, Leslie Hatfield, Katy Culwell, Andy Gower, and Trevor Gariety brought this project to life.
Existing Kitchen
The existing kitchen wasn’t original to the home, it had been remodeled some time in the 80s/90s and it had stayed it’s welcome. The cabinets no longer closed properly. The lazy susan was living up to its name and barely working. A strange alcove acted as an appliance garage but without doors. The three-bowl sink was awkward for dishes. And perhaps worse than all that the windows were on the decline.

Kansas City Kitchen Remodel Wish List
Our client came into the project with some amazing ideas. As a talented wood worker herself, she wanted to add a few custom touches to the kitchen including stained glass doors. She also wanted a spot to house her small tv. Additionally, she wanted the kitchen to capture the feel and charm of her historical home. Best of all, she wasn’t afraid of a little color.
The Kitchen’s Design
While the existing kitchen was dated and deteriorating in parts it did have an excellent layout and sometimes if something isn’t broken, why fix it? We presented four options to our clients, and they opted for the one that virtually left their existing footprint intact. One big change is we pushed the wall out to get rid of the awkward alcove and make it a bit more functional. This also meant an update to the powder bathroom.
We also added a bump out window and created a sitting area opposite the kitchen. It gave our client the plant ledge she always wanted and beautiful built-in cabinets for storage.

Stunning Kitchen Material Selections
With the design decided came the fun part of selecting finishes. Our client knew she wanted a stained wood cabinet, something that felt authentic. Megan helped her select beautiful Alder cabinets with a Walnut stain and black glaze. Topping the cabinets are a creamy warm quartz and the green Zellige tile takes center stage as the backsplash.

Katy Culwell brought the design and material selections to life in this beautiful 3D rendering. It really helped the clients get a feel for what their new kitchen would look like.

Kitchen in Construction
With the design and selections made it was time to pass the baton (yes the Olympics are still on my mind) to the amazing production team. Helmed by Director Andy Gower and run by Trevor Gariety the project came to life beautifully, although there were a few hiccups. During demolition Trevor uncovered an entire exterior wall with termite damage. We were able to get it fixed and stay within our existing timeline for our client.

Stunning Kansas City Tudor Kitchen
While the layout didn’t drastically change the kitchen itself did. It feels warm, inviting, more spacious and a place we’d want to spend a lot of time. While the cabinets and backsplash are dark and warm the bright walls, trim, and lighter countertop keep the space from feeling dark. Windows on both sides of the kitchen flood the space with natural lights and views of the beautiful Brookside neighborhood.

We added a few open cabinets tucked to the side for our client to house her tv, cookbooks, and other items.

Megan included a glass door cabinet to the right of the range helping the space feel open and providing a cabinet for our client to house her pottery collection. Our client purchased the three accent tiles for the backsplash. We created a custom frame for them, and they look stunning with the green Zellige tiles.

In the sitting area opposite the kitchen, we added two built-in cabinets. Our client created the stunning stained glass we installed in the doors. The new bump out window gives our client the plant ledge she always wanted and the ultimate sitting area to enjoy a morning cup of joe.
