Setting the Stage: Preparing a Modern Lake Home for Transformation
When construction began, the home already carried strong architectural presence. Glass walls, brick structure, and clean modern lines defined its identity. The design was unmistakably Roger Kraft.
These homeowners are repeat clients and architects themselves, which added another layer of intention to the process. They stayed closely involved in design and decision-making with Kelly Summers throughout construction. From the start, they focused on honoring the home’s original architectural elements while making it more modern and livable for their family.
Behind those existing elements sat outdated systems and compartmentalized spaces. The kitchen, in particular, felt disconnected from the rest of the home. Finishes lacked warmth, and circulation felt limited for how a modern family lives.
The Before

As demolition began, the team worked carefully. Walls came down, but opportunities came forward. Each exposed condition helped guide the next decision. As a result, the goal remained consistent: improve function while protecting the integrity of the architecture.
Throughout construction, Project Manager Brandon Brewington oversaw day-to-day activity on site, coordinating trades and helping navigate the many moving parts of a complex remodel. Meanwhile, Director Andy Gower provided leadership and oversight, ensuring each decision aligned with the project's broader vision and architectural goals.
Throughout this Weatherby Lake whole home remodel, the lake itself remained a constant reference point. Consequently, every change considered natural light, views, and connection to the water.
Structural Changes That Reimagined the Main Floor
One of the most impactful moments came early in construction. The team opened the wall between the kitchen’s breakfast area and the adjacent living space.

Already feels so much more open.
It was a small structural shift, but it changed everything.
Light moved deeper into the home. Sight lines expanded toward the lake. Movement improved across the main floor. The kitchen no longer felt isolated. It became part of a connected living experience.
At the same time, the team preserved the home’s architectural rhythm. Ceiling lines, transitions, and proportions stayed intact. This balance allowed the new openness to feel intentional rather than disruptive.
In this lakeside remodel, restraint mattered as much as change.
Coordinating Full-Home System Upgrades
Midway through construction, the scope expanded.
The homeowners requested full smart home integration throughout the property. That decision revealed a larger challenge. The home’s existing low-voltage system could not support modern automation.

This required a coordinated effort across trades. Electricians opened walls and ceilings to replace outdated wiring. Framing and drywall teams followed behind to restore finished surfaces. All of this happened while the broader Weatherby Lake whole home remodel stayed on schedule.
The result was invisible infrastructure. Lighting, controls, and automation systems now disappear seamlessly into the architecture.
Navigating Construction Challenges in an Architect-Designed Home
Working in a Roger Kraft-designed home required precision.
Every decision carried weight. Even small details affected how the architecture read as a whole. Trim alignment, cabinet reveals, and lighting placement all had to support the original design language.
The challenge was clear. Modernize without overpowering. Add function without losing form. Introduce warmth without compromising structure.
That balance guided every trade on site throughout this Weatherby Lake whole home remodel.
Materials, Craftsmanship, and Precision in Execution
As construction progressed, material installation became a defining moment.
The design relied on contrast and restraint. Matte black cabinetry paired with natural wood grain introduced warmth while maintaining a clean contemporary look in the main kitchen. For the basement kitchenette, the team chose similar finishes.

In the main kitchen, Carrara Morro quartz wrapped the perimeter with a waterfall edge at the peninsula for a seamless finish. At the range wall, Cambria Annicca added a focal moment with movement and subtle variation in natural light. To keep things sleek and add a reflective element, we added a custom painted back glass backsplash for the other kitchen walls.

The coffee bar area got a textured white stone backsplash which played into the contemporary feel while adding a subtle visual interest.

Integrated appliances further supported this approach. Panels concealed refrigeration and dishwashing elements, allowing the architecture to remain the focus. At the same time, high-performance appliances, including a larger Wolf range, elevated both the function and feel of the space.

Lighting upgrades reinforced the same intent. Outdated fixtures were replaced with trimless recessed lighting, creating a clean and uninterrupted ceiling plane throughout the home.
Personalization played an important role throughout the remodel. In the daughter's room, existing built-ins inspired a custom closet addition and dedicated vanity area designed around her daily routine. While the overall home embraces a clean contemporary aesthetic, this space introduces softer details through custom purple cabinetry, feminine wallpaper, and an oval-shaped backsplash. These elements create a room that feels cohesive with the rest of the home while giving it a distinctly personal character.

In this Weatherby Lake home remodel, every material choice worked toward clarity, warmth, and cohesion.
Problem-Solving in Real Time
No large-scale renovation moves without surprises.
During demolition, the team discovered a leak tied to a flat roof scupper in the lower level. Construction paused briefly while a roofing specialist resolved the issue at its source.
While we promise our clients no surprises when it comes to communication, budgets, and timelines, remodeling can still reveal unexpected conditions hidden behind walls, ceilings, and finishes. The key is how those discoveries are handled.
In this case, the issue was identified early, communicated clearly, and addressed before work continued. By resolving the problem at its source, the team protected the long-term integrity of the home and prevented larger issues down the road.
It also reinforced a core principle of this Weatherby Lake whole home remodel: solve problems fully before moving forward. You can read more about our process here.
