Starting With Untapped Potential
When these homeowners built their Cedar Creek home several years ago, they always knew one area would eventually become something more.
While most of the basement was finished during the original construction, a lower-level section remained unfinished. Located just a few steps below the main basement living area, the space sat waiting for the right purpose and the right vision.

The unfinished area before the remodel.
As the family's wellness goals became an increasingly important part of everyday life, they began imagining how this overlooked area could better support their lifestyle.
However, they didn't want a basic exercise room. Instead, they envisioned a dedicated fitness space that felt elevated, thoughtfully designed, and connected to the rest of the beautifully designed home.
That’s when they called us.
Working closely with Schloegel designer Andrea Stone, the homeowners explored how this unfinished space could become a boutique inspired fitness studio tailored to their routines, goals, and personal style. Project Director Jeff Penrose oversaw the production scheduling side of the project. Meanwhile, Project Manager Cody Harding led construction on-site. Together, the team created a space that feels refined, intentional, and fully integrated with the home.

Understanding the Clients' Goals
At Schloegel, our Design-Build Remodeling process starts by listening.
Before discussing finishes, layouts, or equipment placement, Andrea spent time learning how the homeowners planned to use the space and what would make it successful for their everyday routines. Through those conversations, she gained a deeper understanding of not only the equipment they wanted to incorporate, but also how they preferred to exercise, when they typically worked out, and what kind of environment would motivate them to use the space consistently.
The clients wanted room for a treadmill and rowing machine, a dedicated area for yoga and stretching, space for free weights, WallBars for functional strength and mobility training, and a media wall for guided workouts and entertainment. Just as importantly, they wanted the room to feel beautiful.
Because our client has such a refined sense of style, it was equally important that the space feel elevated and expressive—something that felt less like a utilitarian workout room and more like a beautifully designed extension of the home. The goal was to strike that balance between performance and polish, where function and aesthetics work together in a more glamorous way.
With an almost perfectly rectangular footprint and a few subtle bump-outs, the space offered an ideal starting point for thoughtful planning. From there, Andrea and our architecture team translated the vision into a refined layout that maximized flow, defined functional zones, and preserved an open, airy feel throughout.

The space needed to function like a gym, but it didn't need to look like one. Those early conversations ultimately shaped every decision that followed.
Designing a Boutique Fitness Experience in This Cedar Creek, Olathe Basement Gym Remodel
With a clear understanding of the homeowners' priorities, Andrea began developing a design that feels more like a luxury fitness studio than a traditional basement workout room.
Once the goals for this Olathe basement gym remodel were clearly defined, Andrea partnered with our architecture team to bring the vision to life. Together, they translated the homeowners' ideas into detailed design plans and 3D renderings.
These visuals allowed the homeowners to see exactly how the space would come together long before construction began. As a result, everyone could confidently move forward with a shared understanding of the design.
This step is an important part of our "No Surprises" promise. We believe homeowners should know what to expect before construction starts. That includes the design, the process, the timeline, and the investment.
By taking the time to plan thoroughly upfront, we help ensure our clients and team stay aligned from start to finish. The result is a smoother remodeling experience with fewer surprises along the way, a win-win for everyone involved!

From equipment layout to material selections, every detail was intentionally designed to balance performance, durability, and elevated style in this Cedar Creek, Olathe basement gym remodel.
Rather than defaulting to a purely utilitarian gym aesthetic, the team introduced rich wood slat paneling, decorative sconces, and carefully selected artwork. The result is a space that feels athletic, sophisticated, and intentionally composed. These layered design elements elevate the room and add character often missing from home fitness environments.
To further enhance the boutique fitness studio vibe, Andrea incorporated a series of design-forward details that elevate both form and function. Three arched, full-length mirrors with integrated dimmable lighting not only support workouts but also help visually expand the space, adding depth and softness to the room. The adjustable lighting allows the environment to transition effortlessly from energizing morning workouts to more relaxed evening sessions.
A curated Muhammad Ali boxing art print introduces a bold, athletic edge.
Meanwhile, Visual Comfort wrapped sconces from the Signature Collection’s Piel Series add a sculptural layer of lighting throughout the room. Their soft, diffused glow brings warmth and artistry to the walls, helping the space feel less like a basement gym and more like a high-end fitness studio.
Together, these details create a space that is both highly functional and deeply connected to the rest of the home. Instead of entering a room defined only by equipment, visitors experience a thoughtfully designed environment. It reflects the homeowner’s personal style and appreciation for elevated design.
The result is a boutique fitness space that encourages movement and supports daily wellness routines. Most importantly, it achieves this without ever compromising beauty.
Performance and Function in a Cedar Creek Olathe Basement Gym Remodel
Of course, beautiful design was only part of the equation.
This Cedar Creek, Olathe basement gym remodel also needed to stand up to daily use, athletic equipment, and years of wear and tear. Every finish, system, and material was carefully selected to support an active lifestyle while still maintaining the elevated boutique feel the homeowners envisioned.
As framing began, the space started to take shape from the ground up.

One of the first major phases involved significant infrastructure updates. These included new plumbing and waste lines tied into the existing home system. The team reconfigured waste stacks in the sub-basement. They broke into the concrete floor at the water service and relocated the main water service closer to the foundation wall and sump pump. From there, they secured the blue water service line directly to the concrete wall for stability. Once complete, the team removed concrete debris and restored the slab. This set the foundation for everything that followed.
Next came the mechanical and electrical work, which brought the space to life.
The team completed electrical rough-ins for recessed can lighting, decorative sconces, mirror power sources, and the media wall. They installed dedicated outlets for the full-length mirrors. They also powered the workout and entertainment zones. In addition, they installed a Panasonic ventilation fan to support airflow and maintain comfort during workouts.

Then, came insulation and sound proofing.

Next, we hung drywall. This is when the space really starts to look like a room.

With the infrastructure in place, the design details began to layer in.
Underfoot, durability was just as important as style. Canyon Select+ Paces Oak LVP was selected for the flooring. It offers a light, natural wood look with waterproof performance and built-in cushioning. This makes it ideal for a high-traffic fitness environment while still keeping the space bright and inviting.

After the flooring was installed and protected, Cody oversaw the installation of the slat detail walls.

Then we installed custom W.W. Shiloh cabinetry. It features Napa Horizontal Grain inset doors with a custom paint finish and Lancaster door profile. To complete the look, we selected Emtek 6" Modern Rectangular Flush hardware in Satin Brass. This adds a clean, modern contrast while complementing the warmth of the space.

To anchor the built-in storage areas, we finished the shelves and cabinetry tops in Granite Negresco (also known as Nero Mist) with a honed surface. This black granite features subtle gray undertones, fine flecking, and soft veining. As a result, it adds depth and movement without overwhelming the design.
Throughout construction, the team added thoughtful organization details. For example, we installed band hooks in a tucked-away under-stair storage area. This small feature keeps equipment organized and maintains a clean, uncluttered look.

Under-stair storage
As the build progressed, the layout remained a central focus.

Each piece of equipment received a designated place. This created clear functional zones while maintaining an open, flexible layout. The space adapts easily to every workout style. It supports treadmills, rowing, WallBars, weights, and yoga mats.

The three arched mirrors with integrated dimmable lighting were also installed during this phase. They serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. They support form during workouts while also visually expanding the space and reinforcing the boutique fitness studio feel.

That flexibility is one of the greatest advantages of custom design-build remodeling.
Rather than forcing the homeowners’ lifestyle into a pre-existing layout, we designed this Cedar Creek basement gym remodel around how they actually live. The space was built layer by layer, from infrastructure to finish. The result is a space that is both highly functional and beautifully designed!
Sound Control for Real-Life Flexibility
While the stunning finish details are what most people notice first, some of the most important features are hidden behind the walls.
During construction, Cody worked closely with the team to incorporate sound-reducing elements throughout this Cedar Creek Olathe basement gym remodel. The homeowners wanted flexibility for early workouts, late-night sessions, and high-energy music. Because of that, sound control became a key part of the design.
To achieve this balance, low-pressure spray foam was installed at the rim joists. R-15 fiberglass batt insulation was also added in key wall cavities. Together, these materials help reduce sound transfer between spaces. They also improve acoustic separation throughout the home.
As a result, the gym feels energetic without disrupting the rest of the house.
Family members can enjoy different activities at the same time. One person can work out with music playing in the gym. Meanwhile, others can watch a movie in another basement space.
Early risers can exercise without waking the house. Night owls can complete workouts without disturbing others.
These behind-the-scenes details often go unnoticed. However, they make a major difference in how the space functions every day.

Frequently Asked Questions: Basement Gym Remodeling
Is a basement a good place for a home gym?

A professionally designed basement gym can include media walls, storage, sound control, and durable finishes. These features support daily use.

What flooring works best in a basement gym?

Solutions may include insulation upgrades, sound-dampening materials, and specialized wall assemblies. These help reduce noise transfer throughout the home.
Can a home gym be both functional and beautiful?
Absolutely.
One of the biggest misconceptions about home gyms is that they need to feel purely utilitarian. In reality, we approach gym design the same way we approach kitchens, bathrooms, and other living spaces throughout the home.

Some homeowners prefer a more streamlined fitness environment. Others want statement lighting, custom millwork, wallpaper, artwork, and elevated finishes that make the space feel truly special.
