Refining an Already-Finished Basement
The homeowners weren't looking to start from scratch. Instead, they wanted to build on what they already had.
The existing basement offered a comfortable layout and plenty of space for entertaining. However, some of the finishes and design elements no longer felt as polished as the homeowners wanted.
Nina focused on the areas that could make the biggest impact. Rather than changing the entire aesthetic, she introduced more tailored finishes, updated cabinetry, refined architectural details and stronger focal points.
The goal was simple: make the basement feel more cohesive, sophisticated and elevated while preserving the character of the existing space.
Before: Understanding the Existing Space
The existing basement already gave the family plenty of room to spread out, but the spaces weren’t quite working together the way the homeowners wanted.
The bar provided a place to gather, while the family room offered a fireplace, TV and sofa. However, beyond the bar, another living area had become more of a workout space than a place for the family to relax and spend time together.
The existing bar had shelves, but the clients envisioned more intentional and sophisticated wine storage in this area.
The homeowners saw an opportunity to give the old exercise area a new purpose. Instead of using it primarily for exercise, they envisioned a more flexible hangout space with a pool table, comfortable seating, a TV nook, and room for the kids to settle in with their bean bags. Most importantly, they wanted the basement to support multiple ways of gathering while still maintaining distinct zones.
Meanwhile, the powder bath already worked well from a practical standpoint. Still, its finishes felt a little dated compared with the elevated direction the homeowners wanted for the rest of the basement.
From Existing Space to New Vision
Before construction began, Nina worked with the homeowners and our in-house architecture team to develop a plan that balanced their existing aesthetic with a more polished, modern direction.
As a result, the updated layout creates a natural progression through the lower level. The bar serves as the entertaining hub, the family room centers around the fireplace and TV, and the adjacent hangout area gives everyone another place to play, relax or socialize.
The plans helped the team determine where to make larger functional changes, while renderings allowed the homeowners to see how the new materials, cabinetry and finishes would come together. The design kept the overall palette neutral. However, layered materials, custom cabinetry and distinctive details gave the basement more depth and personality.
Meanwhile, the construction team handled the behind-the-scenes work needed to bring the new design together, from removing existing finishes and cabinetry to adjusting walls, relocating plumbing and preparing the space for new flooring and countertops.
Elevating the Basement Bar
One of the biggest focal points of the remodel is the updated basement bar.
Taj Mahal quartzite became one of the defining materials throughout the remodel. The natural stone continues across the bar and into the powder bath, creating a cohesive look throughout the lower level. At the island, the quartzite extends into a waterfall edge for a clean, tailored finish. A Soft White Blanco sink and Kohler Crue bar faucet in Vibrant Brushed Moderne Brass add function while reinforcing the warm, elevated palette.
Custom wine displays take the design a step further. Instead of simply storing bottles, the displays make the homeowners' wine collection part of the room's aesthetic.
