When a young couple hired us for their Leawood remodeling project, they had a clear vision. They wanted the ultimate hangout space. They love hosting friends and family. Over the years, they’ve earned the title of “the cool aunt and uncle.” So naturally, their basement needed to live up to it.
This Leawood basement remodel started as a completely unfinished space. Concrete floors. Exposed framing. Zero personality. However, it had incredible potential. With the right layout and bold design choices, we knew it could become the most-used space in their home.
The Starting Point
Here's what our team saw when we first entered the unfinished basement.

We essentially had a blank slate to work with. Designer Maggie Stephenson worked with our Architecture team to come up with the ideal use of space in the basement. The team made sure to include a full bath with a shower, a bar area with plenty of counter space and storage, room for a large sectional to watch tv, and a spot designated as the home gym. We also left some unfinished space for extra storage.

From the beginning, we focused on function. Our clients wanted a space that worked for game nights, football watch parties, and casual evenings at home. At the same time, they wanted it to feel elevated. Everything needed to flow just right.
Once the plans were drawn and the design decisions were made, it was time to bring it all to life through the construction process.
The Leawood Remodeling Process
First, we completed all framing and defined each zone. The construction phase was led by Joey Merdian and overseen by Director Jeff Penrose.

Then we coordinated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing layouts.

Then it was time to insulate and hang the new drywall.

Once the drywall is installed, everything starts to feel real. This is the stage of the remodeling process where you can finally see the rooms take shape and truly feel how the space will function and flow.

In the bathroom we hung cement backer board then laid tile.

Next, we focused on making the stairs feel modern and bold.

Then we installed trim and flooring.

Then it was time to paint. Maggie and the clients decided on a deep moody color to drench the walls and ceiling.

They chose a dark green custom finish to add a fun pop of color for the bar and bathroom vanity. Gold hardware and bright white counters make the space feel sleek.

After backsplash was laid, in the bar area, we installed the floating poplar bar shelf. Finally, the carpet runner was installed on the stairs adding a little warmth and softness to the space.

Throughout the process, we focused on flow. We also paid close attention to sightlines and ceiling details. As a result, the finished basement feels cohesive and intentional.
Built for Entertaining: The Reveal
Finally, the completed Leawood basement remodel in all its moody, polished glory. Of course, style only matters if the space works. So, we designed this Leawood basement remodel around real life.

The basement feels like your favorite neighborhood bar. Only better. You never have to leave home.

The large TV anchors the living area and makes game days, or movie nights feel immersive. Meanwhile, the poker table turns casual evenings into memorable nights.

Just down the hall, the full bathroom with a shower gives overnight guests privacy and comfort.

In addition, the dedicated home gym allows our clients to prioritize wellness without sacrificing entertaining space, or leave the comfort of their home.

This Leawood basement remodel is a perfect example of how intentional design and thoughtful remodeling can transform an unfinished lower level into a destination. With moody finishes, a custom bar, and spaces designed for hosting and hanging out, this Leawood project delivered a basement that’s stylish, functional, and undeniably cool.
