Part Three: Revealing a Weatherby Lake Kitchen Remodel

In Part One of this series, we shared the starting point and vision behind this Weatherby Lake whole home remodel. Then, in Part Two, we stepped behind the walls to explore the construction phase, where thoughtful planning, problem-solving, and craftsmanship began bringing that vision to life.

Now, it's time for the reveal.

Of all the spaces transformed throughout this home, the kitchen may tell the story best. What was once a dated and disconnected room has become a warm, contemporary gathering place designed around the way this family lives every day. Better flow, stronger connections to surrounding spaces, and sweeping lake views helped shape every decision along the way.

At the same time, honoring the home's original architecture remained a top priority. Through thoughtful layout changes, integrated appliances, layered materials, and carefully selected details, the kitchen now feels as though it has always belonged within Roger Kraft's original design.

In part three of the series, we're stepping inside the heart of the home and sharing how this Weatherby Lake kitchen remodel helped reconnect the entire main floor. Then, in Part Four, we'll reveal the remaining spaces and show how each room contributed to a home that feels renewed from top to bottom.

Why This Weatherby Lake Kitchen Remodel Became the Heart of the Project

Some spaces carry more weight than others.

For this Weatherby Lake kitchen remodel, the kitchen quickly became one of those spaces.

The more the homeowners explored how they wanted to live in the home, the clearer the opportunity became. The existing kitchen felt disconnected from the surrounding spaces. Meanwhile, sterile finishes, mismatched appliances, and a narrow opening to the living room limited movement and blocked sight lines to the lake beyond.

However, the opportunity extended far beyond updating finishes.

Instead, this kitchen had the potential to reconnect the main floor, strengthen the home's relationship to the water, and create a gathering space that felt true to both the family and the architecture itself.

Because the homeowners are architects—and repeat Schloegel clients—they approached every decision thoughtfully. Together, we focused on honoring Roger Kraft's original vision while creating a space that better supported everyday life.

As a result, this Weatherby Lake kitchen remodel became one of the most transformative parts of the entire renovation.

Opening the Space and Reconnecting the Main Floor

While the finished kitchen is beautiful, its greatest success may be how it changed the experience of the entire main floor.

Previously, a narrow opening separated the kitchen's breakfast area from the adjacent living space. As a result, movement felt restricted and views of the lake felt disconnected from the kitchen experience.

To address this, we opened the wall between the two spaces. Although the structural change was relatively modest, the impact was immediate.

Natural light now travels farther throughout the home. Sight lines extend toward the water. In addition, the family and guests can move more freely between spaces.

Most importantly, the kitchen no longer feels isolated. Instead, it serves as a natural extension of the surrounding living areas. Because of this change, the entire home feels larger, brighter, and more connected to its lakeside setting.

Designing for Function Without Expanding the Footprint

One of the most impressive aspects of this Weatherby Lake kitchen remodel is that the footprint remained unchanged. Rather than adding square footage or majorly changing the layout, we focused on making every inch work harder.

First, we removed a dated built-in desk that no longer served the family's needs. In its place, we created a dedicated beverage station complete with a wine refrigerator and additional storage.

At the same time, the layout was refined to improve workflow and support everyday living. Integrated appliance panels conceal refrigeration and dishwashing elements, creating a clean visual rhythm throughout the space.

Meanwhile, a larger Wolf range became a focal point while also delivering the high-performance cooking experience the homeowners wanted. Together, these updates elevated both the function and feel of the kitchen.

As a result, the space now works harder without feeling busier.

Materials That Added Warmth to a Contemporary Kitchen

One of the project's primary goals was to introduce warmth while maintaining the home's contemporary character. To achieve that balance, designer Kelly Summers worked with our clients to make intentional material selections.

Matte black cabinetry paired with visible wood grain creates contrast while softening the kitchen's clean architectural lines. At the same time, the natural texture adds depth and warmth without overwhelming the space.

Carrara Morro quartz wraps the perimeter countertops with carefully mitered edges, creating a seamless and refined appearance. Meanwhile, Cambria Annicca at the range wall introduces movement, subtle shimmer, and visual interest that changes throughout the day as natural light shifts across the surface.

Throughout the space, every material was selected to support the architecture rather than compete with it. As a result, the kitchen feels bold yet restrained. Contemporary, yet welcoming.

Inside the Butler's Pantry

While the kitchen takes center stage, the surrounding spaces play an equally important role in supporting daily life.

Just beyond the kitchen, the butler's pantry received its own thoughtful transformation. Although it visually connects to the kitchen, it introduces subtle moments of personality through texture and material variation.

Together, the supporting spaces help the kitchen function more efficiently while enhancing the experience of the entire main floor.

Favorite Design Details Throughout the Space

As with many successful remodels, some of the most memorable moments live in the details.

The waterfall peninsula creates a strong architectural statement while maintaining an open feel. Trimless recessed lighting contributes to the clean contemporary aesthetic and allows materials to take center stage. Integrated appliances disappear into the cabinetry, creating uninterrupted lines throughout the room. Meanwhile, the Wolf range anchors the kitchen with both performance and presence.

Even the views become part of the design.

Because the layout now embraces the lake beyond, changing light and water views contribute to the experience of the space throughout the day. These details may seem small individually. However, together they create a kitchen that feels intentional, cohesive, and deeply connected to the home around it.

At the end of the day, the success of this Weatherby Lake kitchen remodel isn't measured by the cabinetry, appliances, or even the lake views—it's measured by moments like these.

Gathering with family and friends. Sharing a glass of wine. Watching the sunset over the water. Enjoying a space that feels both beautiful and effortless to live in.

While thoughtful design and craftsmanship helped bring the vision to life, the real goal was always to create a home that better supports the people who live there. A home that feels connected to its surroundings, respectful of its architectural roots, and ready for the memories still to come.

For these homeowners, that vision has become reality.

Looking Ahead: The Final Home Reveal

The finished kitchen feels striking without feeling too loud. It feels contemporary without feeling cold. Most importantly, it feels connected—to the architecture, to the lake views beyond, and to the way this family lives every day.

While the materials and finishes certainly make an impact, the true success of this Weatherby Lake kitchen remodel lies in how the space functions. Sight lines feel longer. Movement feels easier. Gathering feels more natural. As a result, the kitchen no longer stands apart from the home. Instead, it helps connect every space around it. However, while the kitchen may have become the heart of the remodel, there is still more of the story to tell.

In the final part of the series, we'll reveal the remaining spaces throughout the home and explore how each room—from the primary suite to the lower-level retreat—contributed to a transformation that feels cohesive, personal, and deeply connected to its architectural roots.

FAQ: Weatherby Lake Kitchen Remodeling

What adds the most value in a kitchen remodel?

Layout improvements, custom cabinetry, appliance integration, and improved flow typically add the most value. Creating stronger connections between living spaces can also dramatically improve daily function.

Can you remodel a kitchen without changing the footprint?

Absolutely. While our team specializes in kitchen remodels that often include reconfiguring floor plans and structural changes, expanding the footprint isn't always necessary to make a significant impact.

In many cases, thoughtful design decisions can dramatically improve how a kitchen functions within its existing space. Strategic appliance placement, improved workflow, custom storage solutions, and well-designed cabinetry can make a kitchen feel more efficient and enjoyable to use every day. Updated finishes, integrated appliances, and improved lighting can also transform the look and feel of the space without moving walls.

Because we have an in-house architectural and design team, we evaluate each kitchen individually and recommend solutions based on how you live in the space. Sometimes that means opening walls and reimagining the layout. Other times, the biggest improvements come from making the most of the footprint you already have.

Are integrated appliances worth it?

Integrated appliances create a cleaner, more cohesive appearance by blending into surrounding cabinetry. They are especially popular in contemporary and luxury kitchen designs.

Should I open my kitchen to my living room?

Many homeowners benefit from opening kitchens to adjacent living spaces. Doing so often improves sight lines, natural light, circulation, and overall functionality.

What is a contemporary kitchen design style?

Contemporary kitchens emphasize clean lines, thoughtful materials, integrated appliances, and a balance between function and aesthetics. They often feel streamlined while remaining warm and inviting.

What is the benefit of a Wolf range in a kitchen remodel?

Wolf ranges offer professional-grade performance, precise temperature control, and durable construction. They also create a strong focal point within a luxury kitchen.

How do you modernize an architect-designed home?

The key is respecting the original architecture while thoughtfully introducing modern materials, improved functionality, and updated systems. The goal should be enhancement, not replacement.
