2018 Big Splash Reveal

Last updated on December 10, 2022

Ben Bass and his team have been diligently working on the Big Splash bathroom the past few months and the project just completed! Garrett Haskin, our 2018 Big Splash recipient, was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. These conditions have led to mobility challenges for Garrett throughout his life as well as many surgeries, more surgeries than any kid should ever have to go through. When we met Garrett, it was clear how a new bathroom could change everyday activities for him.

Linda Wagar with Fox4 News put together a wonderful story on the Haskin’s and joined us for their bathroom reveal. Take a look!

A Bathroom in Disrepair

Garrett’s existing bathroom not only didn’t accommodate his mobility issues but the tub/shower didn’t even work. The bathtub was original to the home and deterioration had caused water to leak into the basement every time it was used. Unfortunately, his family wasn’t able to make the repairs necessary to get the bathtub working again. Garrett had been forced to use his parents small and cramped primarybathroom where he neede to scoot or craw in and his mother had no access for when he needed additional assistance.

Garrett’s mom, Nanette, had dreamed of having a repaired bathroom and widening the door. She knew how important it was to provide Garrett with the independence every teenager deserves. It would also prove much safer for him and peace of mind for her. She says she often had to help him into the primarybathroom and would wait patiently outside listening if he needed help.

Changes Are Coming!

Amy Boeshaar worked with the Haskin family to understand Garrett’s needs and how to create a new bathroom to accommodate them. On the list a wider door, a toilet with plenty of space and grab bars and finally a zero-entry shower with grab bars.

The bathroom turned out amazing! Yes, it looks beautiful but even more important Garrett can do everything he needs to without any assistance. Nanette said for the first time in a very long time, if ever, he’s been able to go in and close the door and she doesn’t need to worry about him.

So often we share the story of the recipient and their bathroom but there is often more to the story and that is definitely true here. Ben Bass, the Lead Carpenter, forged a lasting friendship with Garrett. He had the opportunity to teach Garrett some carpentry skills while I’m sure Garrett showed Ben a few gaming tricks. The Haskins have definitely become part of the Schloegel Design Remodel family and who knows maybe we have a future Apprentice in Garrett!

Thank you, Haskin family, for the opportunity to come into your home and we hope life is just a little easier for Garrett each day.

Thank You to our Partners!

We COULD NOT do this without some of our amazing partners. So many of them donate time and materials making these projects possible. Several of them have reached out to us asking how they can help before we’ve even kicked the process off.

Love Fund thanks so much for helping us on another successful Big Splash. And last but certainly not least, Linda Wagar of Fox4 Problem Solvers thank you for your beautiful piece on the Haskin family!
