Every year, as part of Schloegel Design Remodel’s Big Splash promotion, we seek to help as many Kansas City families in need as possible. Every year we get numerous submissions about deserving families, and in many cases, a bathroom can completely change the lives of the families and children.
But the full bathroom remodel goes to one recipient every year. This year, we helped the Vejrosta family, and their daughter Abby. You can read more about the project here.
While there is only one Big Splash recipient every year, we want to do everything we can for families of special needs children. So we began the Ripple Effect, where we help families that may be in need of smaller remodeling projects.
This year, we constructed a new shower for Evan Kelne and his family. Evan, 16, suffers from Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Microcephaly and Epilepsy. Evan’s disabilities make him very uncomfortable in water, so bathing is incredibly difficult. He would fight shower time, and cause water and wall damage. His parents were assisting him on a daily basis, but they wanted him to gain his independence.
To grant Evan his desired bathing independence, Schloegel Design Remodel built him a custom shower, complete with a stool that allowed him to sit, railings so he can hold himself up, and a flexible, adaptable showerhead so he can use it as he feels comfortable. The higher walls and glass provide protection for the walls and floors while he bathes.
