In December we introduced you to the Coots family, our 2017 Big Splash recipients. The Coots family has four boys including Jonathan (17) and Joseph (2). Both Jonathan and Joseph were born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. This has impacted their mobility and they both use wheelchairs.
The family’s main floor bathroom was not built for wheelchair accessibility which has not only proved challenging for the boys but the entire family. Amy Boeshaar worked with the family to put together a design that better accommodates the boys and their needs as well as the whole family.
In the new design, an accessible shower replaces the old bathtub. The design also largens the door opening and includes a pocket door creating enough space to fit a wheelchair.
“When we heard that we had won the Big Splash, I was truly surprised and immediately felt so blessed and grateful. To have one room in a home that is not very accessible, that will work for the boys is a true blessing. The independence it will bring Jonathan and Joseph is priceless.” Jennifer Coots
The project’s construction kicked off on January 8. John Molner and his crew got started right away. First came the demo followed by framing, plumbing and electrical. The project is moving along quickly, in fact, it’s almost halfway done!
Linda Wagar with Fox 4 Kansas City Problem Solvers stopped by the project last week. While there she took a look at the construction and sat down with Jennifer Coots to learn a little more about their family.
The bathroom is scheduled to be completed by the end of next week. Once completed we’ll be excited to share the big reveal with you!
