This week, we’re highlighting one of the many custom solutions our Handyman Services Team is able to provide to Kansas City homeowners. For this project, we provided a more balanced look to this Olathe living space with a tailored shelf installation and a sleek recess for the wall-mounted television. This custom project was designed by Troy Stout and crafted by Handyman Mitchell Talmage.
A Living Space Lacking Balance
These clients wanted their living space to feel more symmetrical and balanced. To one side of the fireplace were some existing lower cabinets and shelving that featured flush mounted puck lights. The television was installed on the opposite side of the fireplace. The location of the television made viewing it from certain angles difficult. We were tasked with recreating the shelves exactly and moving the television above the mantel to become more centralized.
Creating the Recess and Providing a Custom Shelving Solution
To create the inset detail, we cut away the existing drywall and installed a header large enough to accommodate the television. We then installed new framing, drywall, and rounded corner bead. The new inset was then finished to match the rest of the living area. We then furnished the new built-in shelves and custom fit them with display lighting. After we installed the handcrafted shelves, the space definitely had a different feel!
A New Symmetry with Custom Shelving
The new living room is now symmetrical and has a more tailored look. The display opportunities have been doubled thanks to the new built-in shelves and these clients have plenty of space to showcase their collection of ceramics and small sculptures. We love how the recessed television makes the space look clean and customized.
