Bath Remodel $30,000-$60,000 & Best of Show Under $75,000
This original master bathroom was remodeled for a handicapped individual who lived in the home previous to the current homeowners. It was institutional feeling and not conducive for their lifestyles. They wanted a spa experience while maintaining a livable design. The new master bath layout features a walk in shower, a freestanding modern airbath, vanity cabinetry with accessible storage and a linen closet with future washer/dryer hookups. Porcelain tile and quartz countertops are beautiful but practical surfaces in this space. Best of all, we were able to find left over space to fit another bathroom in the existing footprint!

Kitchen Remodel $80,000-$120,000
This unique home was a front to back split with the kitchen located in the lower level. The objective of the project was to update this 50’s kitchen and create an open floor plan encompassing the entire lower level. Shaker inspired details are seen through out the project but primarily in the quarter sawn oak cabinetry. Soapstone selected for counter tops and rustic slate stack stone blend with the cabinetry and is enhanced with many lighting effects. The selection of engineered Tiger wood was laid with low voltage floor heat to add both beauty and comfort to the room.

Interior Specialty
Storage was the problem for this family with four children. The kitchen pantry was full with craft supplies and games and the laundry was barely large enough for just the equipment. The exiting laundry now contains locker style cubby spaces for each child. Creation of a new laundry /craft room space is completely functional for organization while being inviting and fun for the kids. Accommodations were made for built in laundry, pantry for household items, a large sink with hanging space above and a rear entry from the backyard. A wall complete with craft storage cabinetry, counter space for activities and an bookcase for art projects and games make this space fun for the whole family.

This bathroom transformation is magnificent! The original fixture locations are maintained, while each component of the bath is designed to maximize function, space, and style. The new vanity features slab doors, clean lines, and excellent storage. The new open shower gives the illusion of a larger space. Onyx base and wall panels provide sleek lines and a clear glass shower door keeps the room feeling spacious. The “wow factor” is achieved with the vertical laid linear glass tile. Round mirror, vessel sink, and hanging pendant lights add the finishing touches for this new stunning and modern bath.

Whole House Remodel Under $250,000
The original kitchen featured vintage cabinetry, appliances, and materials reflective of the modern 1960′s era. Our goal was to create a new kitchen reminiscent of the original genre, but with up-to-date material and conveniences. Frameless red oak, espresso stained cabinetry accented with stainless steel and glass creates the perfect blend of classic and modern elements in this marvelous new kitchen. All through this home, the use of timeless materials, and a commitment to its original style and vintage, produced a masterpiece that will be treasured throughout the next 50 years.
Universal Design and Sponsor Support Blend for a Winning Custom Bath Remodel
Big Splash Recipient Family Selects their Custom Bath Options
The design process is underway for Simone Porter and her family, recipients of Schloegel Design Remodel and the Love Fund for Children’s second annual Big Splash custom bath remodel. We recently presented two plans to the family. One preserved a small closet in the bathroom, and the other removed the closet but gave Simone more room to maneuver her wheelchair. The family selected the second option agreeing that functionality and the resulting independence for Simone was their highest priority.
In creating the design, we asked for Simone’s input first. She really helped us understand her true needs. For example, we discussed installing a touchless faucet, but Simone decided she just wanted a faucet with bigger handles so that she could control the temperature and flow of the water better. This seemingly small decision really speaks to her wish for more independence. We also hosted Simone’s mom, Sheila, at our showroom. Together we selected fixtures (provided by Ferguson) and other finishes including a fun blue glass accent tile (provided by Daltile).
Debby Allmon, lead designer on the Big Splash project, was recently certified in universal design. She was excited to apply universal design principles such as floorplan requirements, optimal grab bar locations, and curbless shower design to this project. Her certification also helped with the careful planning that was needed to design the Porter’s new shower. Simone can’t use one of her arms, so the showerhead, controls, and grab bar all needed to be placed appropriately.
The Big Splash is truly a partnership between Schloegel, the Love Fund for Children, the recipient family and all of our participant sponsors. Schloegel would like to thank the many participant sponsors who will contribute to this project. See a full list of sponsors on our website’s Big Splash page.
Congratulations Simone!
Schloegel Design Remodel and the Love Fund for Children are thrilled to be working with Simone Porter and her family as the second annual Big Splash recipients. We worked with the Love Fund for Children to request nominations from area pastors, social workers, teachers and other child services professionals. We received seven applications from across the metro and visited three of the applicants’ homes. Our decision was not easy because we appreciate the needs that all of the applicant families have. We felt, in the end, that an accessible bathroom remodel will help the Porter family most because it will help Simone gain independence and also reduce physical strain on her parents.
Simone is a friendly girl with a positive outlook. She loves all the things that every other fourth grade girl does – like Selena Gomez – and enjoys any amount of independence she can gain. Simone has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair which does not fit into the family’s bathroom. Her parents walk or carry her into the bathroom. This is very hard on both Simone and them. Her parents must physically lift her into the bathtub and assist her with all of her daily living skills.
The Big Splash custom bathroom remodel that Schloegel and our sponsors will provide for the Porter family will help to give Simone a little more independence, allowing her to be more like other kids.
Our Commitment to Lead-Safe Home Remodeling
Many homeowners planning a remodel are unaware that there is a law in place, the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule, which requires firms and their employees to be trained and certified to follow lead-safe work practices during renovations in homes built before 1978. It is estimated that lead-based paint was used on 38 million homes before it was banned for residential use in 1978. Dust from this paint is one of the leading causes of lead poisoning in children under the age of six. Schloegel Design Remodel is a certified firm in Kansas and Missouri, and currently has eleven Certified Renovators on staff. We are proud of our commitment to lead-safe work practices and an overall safe job site.
